The old guys are going to have lots and lots of new spares for their equipment. And they are going to get them cheap! So a few lads believe the Hollywood nonsense lets hope they bring lots of money to spend around town before they go home. If gold mining is like diamond mining then a lot of people are going home broke! In order to make it; You have to have the experience years in the field brings before you spend thousands on high end gear. And even then nothing is guaranteed. The living conditions are rough and the luxuries are few and very far in between, if you strike it lucky you are one in 500. The chances can be improved massively by doing the right research and surrounding yourself with real experts that will get down and do the job no questions asked. The most important thing for a newbie is to shuttup and listen and learn from the men that have been doing it for years on end. My 2 p's worth inflation excluded. Andy |

| homestead54 | Re: Looking to set up a crew just like the TV show "Gold Rush" i prefer the browning 7mm mag as choice- i normal carray a pre 1960- model 100 win 308. light accuarate to 500 yards without balistic drop- hot loads allows 700 yards. my 7mm mag with 1k range finder allows distance- and low drop to bullet add hot loads and you never miss- operator error excluded. a 1/4 mile offshore is not a long shot most alaskan's can do it with a 22 at a squirrel. it is food in remote wilderness. learn alaska and the people- stay out of the bars and the boasts, go to remote vills- and learn from life -long residences- not the newcomers that think they know qalaks cause they been here for a summer! |

There is no 338 Weatherby. It is a 340 Weatherby and I have a friend with one. Never shoots it and the only reason he has it is a client gave it to his father, and old master guide. Most don't use magnums and those that do seem to prefer the 308 WinMag. 2. Maybe the folks down your way are snipers, but the average Alaskan can't make a 1/4 mile shot. Mostly because they were never trained as snipers. 3. I'm a bit curious about this prospecting permit story. Do you mean claim? Maybe dredging permit? Perhaps water rights or discharge permits? Maybe it is POI? 4. Let us assume you mean claim. Your time-frame is in error. As the area is under claim or lease, it will cost you a ginormous amount to buy the claim. The maintenance fee or royalty each following year is minimal. 5. You might wanna stay out of the BOT next time you get to Nome. There isn't much intelligence at work within those walls. Just liquid stupid, fueled mouths. |

Glad you came up here three times and polled the State on Avg Hunting Rifles... Actually its a Mixed Bag I know alot of hunters and none of them own a .338 weatherby. Guess all my friends are Below AVG but at least they bag the Moose and Bears. More people own .300 Win Mags and the WSSM than the .338 While a .338 will make that shot I dont disagree there. |

| jameswcave | Re: Looking to set up a crew just like the TV show "Gold Rush" The average hunting rifle in Alaska is a 338 weatherbe or larger and with a good scope. A mile and a half will more than reatch a 1/4 mile off shore as you'll be a sitting duck in water with no place to go. |

Leases, claims, APMA permits, claim fees, lease fees, etc. |

To come and go is one thing, to try and stay their is another. Their is just know where to stay or live and it cost to much to buy property. I was, or still am thinking of taking a boat up to Alaska just to have a place to live while looking for equipment to build a dregde. I'm very interest in going back up to Alaska and checking Nome. Their are two places in nome where you do not need a prospecting permit. Every where else, if you find a place to prospect is going to caust for prospecting permit. The first year is not to bad, but the second, third and forth year, unless you found minerals. The average person could not afford to renew the permit, and the claims go back to the State. jameswcave@hotmail.com |
