Ultimately, as they say, the proof is in the pudding!

Ophir was subjected to "proof of concept". The concept was proven to work. It works well - even at low grade.

Running low grade tailings has the advantage that you don't have to worry about dilution of the material. It's already diluted. When the tailings are processed, the recovery of gold from "the process" is compared to the recovery of gold from a test standard - like the Proline highbanker/combo.

The process is improved and re-tested. If all of the inputs and outputs are measured, an honest evaluation of the performance of the recovery process can be made.

Can it be profitable running 0.01 troy ounce per cubic yard material with a Bobcat that can feed the plant at 5 cubic yards an hour?

The price of gold, the capacity of production and the cost of production affect profitability.

A Bobcat loader burns 10 gallons of diesel per day. A Vanguard 23 HP water pump burns 5 gallons per day.

In rough terms, $150 per day for fuel.

If labor enters the equation, then profitability comes under greater pressure. How much do you want to be paid? How much do other workers want to be paid?

Most equipment operators make at least $50 an hour.

So, that's $500 bucks for the operator per day.

If net pay for gold is $1000, and you produce $500 bucks worth of gold, you are running at a loss.

A wash plant requires water...

Doubling the sluice, doubles the water required to maintain adequate flow through the boxes.

I added one more spray bar for a total of four spray bars. Each spray bar has 150 holes with 3/8" diameter. I increased the hole size to 7/16" on 50 percent of the holes to improve flow.

This setup was marginal from an economic standpoint.

Why? :confused:

The obvious problem was assumed to be the wash plant.

Proving the wash plant:

I placed 36" of Gold Hog matting at the foot of the sluice to capture gold that escaped the Astro-Turf. The only gold that got caught in the Gold Hog was a trace of very fine - almost micron but visible gold.

Losses from the sluice:

I ran 1/2 cubic yard of sluice tails through the Proline Highbanker. No gold was found in the sluice tails.

Losses from the screen deck:

I ran one cubic yard of the oversize tails from the screen through the Proline Highbanker and there was a few milligrams in the single cubic yard. I had ran about 50 cubic yards through the plant and estimated 25 cubic yards of oversize. The net loss from the screen was 75 milligrams from the screen.

Recovery was 1/2 ounce of gold from approximately 50 cubic yards of heads.

The sum of the tails + recovered gold = the heads.

So the loss is estimated at 100 milligrams divided by 15550 milligrams = 0.64 percent.

The Suction intake was located at the end of a ditch which is at an elevation about 10 feet above the spray bars. The ditch was designed by early miners to allow a portion of Ophir Creek to flow at an elevated level above the placer mining activity.

The ditch was flooded by an intense rain storm two days after production began and breached the dam - flooding the foot of the sluice.

I dismantled the wash plant and moved it to Ophir lake.

The lake provides consistent water level for the water pump and has a levee between it and an isolated lagoon that is used for a settling pond and tailings deposit.

The screen size was increased to 6 ft x 6 ft from the 6 ft x 4 ft in the X1 version of the plant. The sluice boxes were doubled to provide two 3 ft x 16 ft sluices. :smile:

I would also add;

When measuring gold, a properly equipped rock lab with calibrated scales and refreshments is required.
