Gold Prospecting in Beautiful Chicken Alaska 2014
There are a number of very good fee prospecting camps in or near Chicken Alaska. One of those camps is the Gold Fever Prospecting camp on the South Fork of the Fortymile River operated by Dean Race.

Dean has posted on his website the registration dates for the 2014 season. For more information you can go to goldfeverprospecting.net

waveaction,

Thanks for the photos!

Were you on South Fork or which creek were you on?

Good Afternoon Geo. I was 26 miles down river on the South Fork. The girl in the picture was at the camp for 3 months. She was dredging almost daily. A real Prospector at heart.

waveaction,

I'm curious; do you go in the river at the crossing by South Fork Lodge or up the highway by Polly Creek? It sounds like you go in at the bridge by the lodge.

When the water is high we put in about 12 miles east of Chicken by the Highway Maintenance Dept. and when the water is low we put in about 14 miles east of Chicken at the South Fork Bridge.

waveaction,

My understanding is that you use air boats or hovercraft to get up the river. It seems that logistics would be a real challenge. Were there problems with getting supplies up the river?

Re: Gold Prospecting in Beautiful Chicken Alaska 2014
When the water is high in June, we run aluminum boats with jet foot on the outboard to run fuel and supplies in to camp. When the water drops we switch over to small hovercraft. Usually supplied by then. Only use them for people. This past summer the water got so low that we had to beach everything downriver and walk a ways to the South Fork bridge (or use a 4 wheeler). Coming back up the Main Stem from the lower bridge is not something I would willingly do during low water. The Falls can get nasty at that time.

There was a couple of Hovercrafts on the river that where capable of hauling heavy loads. Last spring the late winter, then warm weather brought heavy flooding to the South Fork. Jet boats and Hovercraft where dodging ice chunks and trees.

Re: Gold Prospecting in Beautiful Chicken Alaska 2014
waveaction , sounds like normal operations for Interior rivers to me. I spent many late spring days dodging trees and ice getting to my claim in my airboat.

Sometimes I even pushed the envelope more and airboated over the ice to get in early with supplies.

Last season we had a fire fighter who just retired and wanted to buy some claims and equipment and try to prospect for a supplement to his income. He had been watching the gold rush shows. A friend of his convinced him to try it first at goldfeverpropecting before spending a small fortune. He had a wonderful time but seeing the logistics and cost involved and meeting other miners on the rivers he decided there wasn't a lot of money to be made after the expenses (if any) in setting up your own operation.

Waveaction,

That's an excellent story. It shows a number of the points that we have discussed here on the forum in recent years. It is unfortunate that the story is repeated year after year.

There must be a distinction made between recreational mining and commercial mining.

Prospecting on or in the Forty-Mile with the background you have mentioned and in a pay-to-mine setting doesn't represent more than "pay to play". It's similar to taking a trip to Disney Land with the intention of returning with more money in your pocket than you left with. It is fun and entertaining. For those with an interest in recreational mining visiting a pay-to-mine is fun and entertaining.

There are miners that have succeeded in raising families and sending kids to college that are members of this forum. It is certainly possible to generate a profit. The difference is having a profit motive, educating ones-self appropriately and operating with a sense of business.

I booked a trip with Dean Race two years ago and it was the time of my life. The weather was not good, rained almost ever day that summer so the 40 was high and dark. We took a day off the dredge and explored Franklin bar, very cool site, There were bears everywhere. Literally had foot prints in every mud puddle then the next day there were new prints in the same puddles. One bear wore out his welcome and broke into Deans cabin, helped himself to a bottle of brandy and ate the eats off his quad. Look for the before and after pics of the bear.
This is truly Gods country...
I am saving my money so I can go back again someday

Running an 8" dredge completely by feel is brutal. :gonetoofar:

Love the photos. The land looks so mysterious and untraveled . So unlike the way some of California has been described as appearing to have "not a square inch that hasn't been slept on, peed on, ---------- on."

Photos of the North are always very worth seeing.

Bonaro's photos are very well done! I liked the one of the "Moose Mushrooms". Mushrooms represent an excellent source of food in Alaska. Only eat mushrooms that you KNOW are edible. One day season before last, I was walking along (sampling for gold) and an Alaskan acquaintance stopped suddenly and said "LOOK!". I ran to see what he was looking at. There was bunches of small brown mushrooms about the size of the end of your little finger. We bagged up a couple pounds and that evening I added them to my famous Alaskan Goulash!

Here's a related story:
