All politicians will consistently fight for ONE cause - their own re-election. The situations which can quickly influence politicians are those which directly affect their popularity with the voting public. Things like loss of employment, loss of mining tax revenues (with increases in other taxes to maintain government spending levels), loss of government staffing due to no mining, loss of visiting recreational miners' income to the various communitie's merchants etc will quickly be recognized by the politicians as career enders. Rather than just a simple "I disagree with this" type letter or telephone call to your politicians (or newspapers!) I would present the position where specific, unaddressed, bad consequences will directly result from the politician's endorsement / vote on this ill-advised proposal. Show a potential for not being re-elected and any politician will take heed. We, of course, aren't knowledgeable in the specifics of your political situation in Finland - but we all seem to be facing those same general types of unreasonable opposition to mining in both of our countries (and others, as well). On this forum there are various references to governmental studies which show that vacuum dredging is not harmful to the environment - and actually is very beneficial to the fish. Citing those studies, in the face of radical, environmental opposition, might be a helpful 'tool' for you and your fellow miners to use if this is the origin of this proposed legislation. We all wish you and other Finnish miners the best of fortune in this frustrating struggle. It is very good to see you posting again - your mining, and mining knowledge, is certainly of great interest to us. Joe S |

They say they dont have to pay any compensation to us because they let us continue with shovels ! Dont know whether I should laugh or cry. Watch out that they dont invent this in your area. |

Could you please tell us what the greenies won with, any info would be good for all placer and alluvial mining all over the world, in the greenie fight back, , Also, I would suggest the next 9 years would be an excellent opportunity to prove and improve all operations / methods, are or will be in fact, environmentally insignificant , and change the law back to mining in 9 years, faster mining , environmentally " insignificant ", also in many previously mined areas all over the world, these or this type of mining will remove toxic heavy metals in very significant amounts, Also, Please explain, is " Lemmenjoki " a big percentage of " Digging with machines " in the whole country, ???. Sorry gotta post, dredger.

- Lemmenjoki gold fields were discovered 1949, first machine starting 1951 - near by national park was expanded over the gold fields in 1971, politicians promised that gold mining may continue without any restrictions - another law was changed 1991 so that new claims for machine operations were no more possible, only 'old' claims were allowed to continue - now (2011) all machine operations are put to an end after 9 years transition period in Lemmenjoki National Park (http://www.luontoon.fi/page.asp?Section=5076) - we have about 25 machine operations in Lemmenjoki, producing ~ 25kg annually, the rest of the country produces about 5 kg - the total number of placer claims in Finland is about 270, 80% of which are dig with shovel The actual background of banning machines there is fundamental: no machines in national park. However they accused us also on environmental issues in the beginning. |

let GE find "Lemmenjoki", go 22km to the west, go 7km south. If you look very carefully, you see a river flowing first from north to south and then turning west, has been operated with shovel since 50's, with modern machines from 80's.
