New Nugget Detector - White's GMZ

Hi,

White's just came out with a new gold nugget detector that sets a new standard for low cost and ease of operation. The main feature of the new White's GMZ is the lack of features! It only has two knobs and one switch. The idea was to design a detector for those that just can't quite figure out how to tune more complicated detectors. The other goal was to keep the price low. The GMZ list price is $499.95

What makes this unit interesting is the operating frequency - 50 kHz. I've not had a chance to get one of these out in the field yet, but this little unit should be hot on small gold, especially with a small coil. In other words, a great detector for the Kenai Peninsula.

I wonder when Whites is going to list it on their website

Hi,

Yeah, you'd think you'd have all the website stuff ready the day something new comes out. I've actually got units in stock now so obviously they've had plenty of time.

Hope they pay more attention to their detector design than they do to their website.

Hey Steve,
Do you know if they made this one with the control box detatchable from the staff for chest mounting? Is it manual or automatic ground balancing?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Manual ground balance. The box was not made to detach from the rod but it would be easy to modify.

Re: New Nugget Detector - White's GMZ

Well I bought a GMZ and UPS delivered it Wednesday. Yesterday I took the GMZ up to one of my mining claims and played with it for about an hour and a half. It was too hot to stay any longer. It sure is weird running a nugget detector without a threshold. I never tried a Fisher Gold Striker, so I can't say anything about a comparrison.
This particular claim has pretty hot ground and loads of black sand in the washes. The ground noise went away at 61/2 on the ground balance. There were a few large basalt type rocks that would sound off, but all the small hot rocks were not detected. I could run the gain at max most of the time. I have pounded this area before, so I didn't expect to find any nuggets and I didn't. I used a small #8 lead bird shot as a test piece to see how the GMZ would respond. It would hit it, but It ain't a GMT or a GB2.
It would be a good entry detector or one for someone who can't learn to listen for or distinguish the whispers or get the knack of other manual ground balance gold detectors.
The ground balance is different on the GMZ from other manual ground balanced detectors. You just bob the coil up and down above the ground and you turn up the ground balance knob toward a higher number. When the noise stops you are done.

Appreciate the report! That sounds like a fun detector to use. Almost every time I use one of my detectors, I notice I've managed to get the settings unbalanced one way or another. That is so maddening. Maybe this detector would lessen the chances of that happening? (at least for dummies like me).
