Anyone in McGrath?

Are there any forum members in McGrath? This Saturday I'm planning to fly out to spend a week at my claims in Ruby. With the smoke from the forest fires making flying iffy I could end up stuck in McGrath coming or going. A few years ago I was grounded there for three days when the passes were closed in. If I end up there I'll buy a beer for any forum member who are around.

Hi Walt,

Hey, next time you come in point yourself out to me. I'm terrible at connecting names and faces!

I live in McGrath in the winter.
We have a 4700 foot strip between McGrath and Ruby if you get waylayed by weather. We have had a few weather related guests over the years.

Chuck, I'd offer you a ride to McGrath as it's not much out of my way but if you want to be sure and get where you want to be it's best to fly commercial. However I just heard Alaska Air has canceled all flights in and out of Fairbanks because of the smoke from the forest fires. The Ruby webcam shows conditions are zero zero. McGrath looks OK right now.

Neil, I have flown over a large airstrip between McGrath and Poorman but I doubt I could find it again. I should plot those kinds of strips in my GPS for emergencies.

Steve, You have given me good deals on a couple of detectors over the years. I thought it was because you remembered me. I'll bet you give everyone good deals. You always do your radio remotes on Friday afternoons when I'm on the air so I can't get paid to come out and hang around your shop.

Hi Walt,

Well, I'm good at remembering people, and good at remembering names. It is just sticking the two together that trips me up!

Hopefully with fall approaching the fires and smoke will get under control. I need to make a trip out that way myself in a couple weeks.

I am in Ruby. Weather is great. I spent the day detecting on my Greensteon claims. So far no luck. Will spend the night in town then camp at the claims tomorrow night. It is so nice to have running water and showers here in town. Plus internet access is a good thing.

Re: Anyone in McGrath?

There is a front coming in and I have to try to fly out of Ruby tomorrow morning or risk being weathered in for a week according to the weather folks. My boss will not be happy if I have to call in "stuck on the other side of the Alaska Range...again".

A large block of claims were not renewed on Long Creek this year. That creek has produced a huge amount of gold. For the last three days I have detected the tailings hard. 8+ hours a day swinging a detector with no gold.

I dug lots of bulletts and beer cans. Those miners sure liked their Oly. The old timers beat me again. Now I may be getting too old for this.

I'm about ready to sell my plane and the metal detectors and look for a new hobby thats not as expensive and doesn't require as much work... I'm thinking gold fish. At least it has "gold" in the name.

If your looking for a seven seat airplane that will haul 1500 pounds and comes with three metal detectors please contact me. You'll likely find me in McGrath, for the next several days, waiting for the pass to open.

If there is a positive side to this adventure it was my humanitarian effort to feed the bugs. Damn they were thick this year.

Re: Anyone in McGrath?

Long Creek is drag line tailings. I know there has got to be gold there but likely not near the surface. At least the surface I put my coil over. There are many acres of tailings and I only covered the easy ones. Some of these tailings are several hundred feet tall. The older tailings are overgrown and it's difficult to swing a detector in the brush. There's gold there. I just can't find it.

By the way I'm still in Ruby. Didn't get out soon enough. Cieling is 600 feet overcast. If it doesn't lift by afternoon I guess I'll have to get on my rain gear and and head back out to the creek.

Re: Anyone in McGrath?

Chuck,
Be thankful your plane doesn't use avgas. I paid over $7 a gallon Friday in McGrath. How are the two of you going to get to the claims in your ultralite?

I hope your trip is more productive than mine was. I did find a gold pocket watch... or what was left of one. It's my second such find. I sluiced one out one from the Nome beach sands twenty some years ago.
