Hey I am new here and just wanted to pick some brains. I am building a medium sized trommel, its got a 18" pipe and 9 feet long. I will have a 4'x6' vibrating feed table. Im classifying material into 1/4" slots and then 1" holes. im running about 8 feet of expanded metal rifles at 200gpm followed by about 16 feet of 1 x 1/2 angle iron rifles at 400gpm. i am planning on running the trommel motor and vibrating motor with a generator. and am thinking of a honda 4" trash pump and a 3" pump for water supply. Is that more than enough sluice box? i was thinking i would clean it once a day or every 12 hours. I also need an idea of how to catch the big ones?? we have been getting our info from the 1990 klondike gold placer recovery report. any tips or ideas could help.

Welcome to the Forum, Are you running 2 seperate boxes or do they follow one another? The character of the gold and gravel in the area you plan on mining has a lot to do with how you design and run your equipment. A New Zealand style fluid riffle near the head of your box should take care as a nugget trap. Where are you building your unit? Have a great day. awc

the expanded metal rifle boxes zig zag under the trommel and are 24" wide. they tapper to 14" and increase drop and turn into 1x1/2 rifles. im not worried about any nuggets getting through the sluice, im worried about a fist sized nugget just rolling through the trommel. building in fairbanks at shop.
cant post pics yet. |

That say's a lot about the tenor of your ground. Is there a history of large nuggets where you'll be operating? Do you have a shop lined up or are you doing it yourself? I'm also just outside Fbks. and would like to see what you have going. Have a great day. awc

so how do i know how much sluice box is necessary for my operation? 8 feet of 24" expanded metal and 15 of 14"rifles? is that more than enough? what would the benefits of a shorter sluice be and or a Longer sluice??? all my material is ordered i just want to know if anybody can shed some light here for me, Thanks.

Do you have any drawings or plans that you can post of what you are planning on building? You say the expanded dumps into the riffle section right? Where are you running the 2 different cuts from the trommel, you mentioned 1/4" slots and 1" holes? Also what kind of throughput are you going to plan for? I envision the zig-zag loading up at the turns, do you have a slick plate after the turn? Just some thoughts from my inexperienced mind. Have a great day. awc

well i dont have any drawings that are accurate to our constantly changing design. the pipe is feed by a 6x4' vibrating table that has water spraying into it, then it runs across a 2 foot section of 4" rifles then onto the grizzly. 3" and smaller goes through the trommel, wich is 9 feet of 18"x 1/2. 36" of wash space, 24" of slotted pipe with wire mesh inside. than 24" of one inch holes. the 24" of mesh feeds the expanded metal boxes 24" wide 2' of drop plate 2' of slick plate. then 3' 24" wide expanded metal. where the zig zags we are going to build a round end cap that should keep the flow going down to the next box, dont have much room for more slick plate but i wont rule that out as its a good idea. ok material then runs a 5' of 24" wide expanded metal then funnels to a 14"wide 3' long 1" angle box. then it drops into the drop box for the 1" material which then goes through 14" wide 12' long 1" angle sluice. are you confused yet? holly marbles that would boggle my mind if i couldnt see it. I will start posting pics soon.

Still interested if you're building it yourself where I could get a look at it? I'm also contemplating building and finishing a couple of recovery projects & like to see what you're planning/doing. Have a great day. awc
