Pay to Mine Sites in Alaska

I don't see a lot of posts or information about the different pay to mine sites in Alaska. If it is not against the rules of the forum I would like to see input from everyone involved in and those that have experienced the various pay mines. I think it would be a lot of help for the guys like myself that loves to mine but does not live in Alaska but comes up in the summer to various places to mine. I know there are books on the recreational sites that we can go to for free but not one that I know of that lists the pay sites. Just off the top of my head are a few that I know of.
1) Crow Creek
2) Moore Creek
3) Gaines Creek
4) Chicken Gold Camp
5) GPAA Nome
6) Goldfever prospecting on the 40mile river.

Re: Pay to Mine Sites in Alaska

Hi,

I do not like the search function most forums provide.

If you have a specific question, just ask it. But if the idea is to sift through all the previous posts you'd best get good with Google's Advanced Search at http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en Where it says "Search within a site or domain:" enter bb.bbboy.net/alaskagoldforum then enter the words or phrases you want to look for. Like "alaska pay to mine review". By getting the right terms and phrases you can get pretty good returns, and don't forget you can exclude certain words or phrases to further narrow the search. The Google search is far superior to the basic search most forums offer.

Steve, thank you for the tips on the search engines. It helped a lot. Congrats on your selling of Moore Creek. I wish you would share more of your mining experiences on your web site. I understand it takes time and you are busy. It is very informative and a pleasure to read. You are very articulate in your writing. I really enjoy reading about your mining adventures. Thanks Jay

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the kind word. I did kind of fall off of keeping up with my online journal. The good news is I have a few years of stories in my head and I think this winter will allow me a little catch up time. The last couple years were hectic, for sure!

Re: Pay to Mine Sites in Alaska

Hi Zook,

You are too kind!

1) Crow Creek - Great place to find gold at a reasonable price. Chunky gold, pennyweighters not uncommon, 1-2 ounce nuggets have been found. You have to be an aggressive prospector to do well here, though.
2) Moore Creek - 1-3 oz nuggets common, up to 6 oz nuggets found each summer. A 25 oz and 32 oz nuggets found. Good highbanking and so-so dredging.
3) Ganes Creek - Detecting only. Best chance of finding a 1 pound nugget, also best chance of getting skunked. Largest nugget found weighed 122 ounces.
4) Chicken Gold Camp - Great summer before last, ok this year. Mostly sluicing and panning. Some mammoth tooth and ivory finds have been made.
5) GPAA Nome - Great comraderie, not so much gold.
6) Goldfever prospecting on the 40mile river - Don't know.

The thing is you have to know what you are doing at any of these locations, and most people do not. Crow Creek gets lots of rank novices, none of which who have a clue how to look for gold. I almost feel sorry for them and try to help them when I can. So it is easy to find people who have been to any of these places who found no gold. That reflects less on the locations than on the individuals skill. Mining is also very hard work, and so it helps to be in very good condition. And frankly most people these days are not. They simply can't put in the hard labor required. You have to work like a dog to find gold. There is a reason it is almost $1000 per ounce. It is hard to find!

Steve is right about rank novices. I know that this fact is true because I am one of them, but I am starting to learn.( I did find my first nugget this weekend down at Bertha creek:smile:smile: I thought I had read somewhere that there was a pay to mine place down in Hope. And what about that Indian valley gold mine along the seward highway? The have a big sign saying "Pan for gold", but are they a pay to mine place, or just a tourist trap?

Hi eklawok,
Hope Mining Company (HMC) in Hope will lease you ground to mine with a suction dredge, metal detector or dozer. Their leases are for months or summers. Mining at HMC may not be considered to be recreational. HMC has all the permits you need, road access and camping areas. They get 20% of your gold in return. You can PM me if you want contact information.

Ehhh... I think that might be a bit much for me to do with just a hand fed sluice box and a shovel, but thanks for the info Jim. Been having good luck (for me atleast) down at Bertha creek latly and I can be greedy there and keep it all for myself!
