Newbie hear(Dredging For gold questions) Any Help very much apperciated!

Hey guys new guy from Illinois here,. I am 25 year old single male. For the last two years I have been part owner in a lawn care business I am no longer in the lawn care business and am not working anywhere right now. I first got interested in panning for gold when I was 16. I have never panned for gold but dredging looks more interesting to me right now. I have the time in life right now and this looks like something I am really interested in,

Here are some of my questions. First off if I was going to dredge for gold I would definitely want to go somewhere where I know there is Gold.

Second…Nome Alaska is a location that is in my head.. Though I know nothing about the area.. If I were to go and dredge for gold anywhere. Camping there would be a must. Witch leads me to my next question how do the guys camp on the beach do you have to pay for this how do you get permission?..

Third…How is the best way to get equipment there or find equipment. From my understanding Nome Alaska, the only way to get there is by air plane?

Fourth do I need to take scuba lessons before I can dive?.. It’s going to be sometime before I go anywhere though as of right now this is something I really want to do.

Fifth. Overall I got a alot to learn I feel I got a good set of bass skills I grew up working on small engines and have some know welding and stuff like that. I workout regularly and am in good physical shape and my health is good praise god! I appreciate any information. My funding is a working progress, I’m willing to try and try and do all that I can to make something happened.

I’ve often considered going somewhere and working on someone else’s dredge but the more I think about the more I think it would be better to save and build my own dredge. I would possible start on a dredge in Illinois then I got to haul it where ever I go. (Really got a lot to learn thanks for the help guys!J

Also, you can do a search on my username "AK_Au_diver", I've answered all these questions, and many more in great detail on other threads on this site.

Be sure to check the "Alaska Prospecting Forum" box and select the "5 hours ago" drop down and the "and older" radio button.

Maybe focus on my 2012 posts first.

(Ak diver)... Well i think i seen all your 2012 nome post, I very greatful for the information i was able to find. It answered some of the questions but here are the things i am still unsure about.

I take it that wherever you dredge you will have to pay a lease fee.

Also if i were to ever come to nome i would most likley camP, are those guys on the beaches paying to lease that ground so they can setup there tents?

Also i see that shipping a dredge there is going to be out of the question...My main idea if i were to come to nome would be to buy a used dredge in nome or find help to rebuild one aready there?

Im not 100 percent sure where i will gold dredge or even if i will gold dredge...This is something i am very interested in and i thank you for your time..

All I can say is that IF YOU'VE NEVER DREDGED BEFORE, running off to one of the most expensive areas to live and dredge is not the thing to do!

Find a club in the lower 48 and learn the basics.

There are areas in the lower 48 where you can dredge gold and get your experience.

I'm sure others will agree.

This is the biggest reason to find a club in the lower 48 and learn the basics. No matter what recovery device the placer miner uses, panning skills are really needed.

Many starting out spend far too much money in an attempt to bypass skill development. You need to learn the basic skills first.

LipCa isn't kidding about the cost of living in Nome. It is at the edge of the known world and expensive. Now figure if you run out of money, you better have someone send you some or take the long walk. No roads back to civilization, but you could go to Teller, Taylor or Council. Forget the Iditarod trail unless you can walk on water. No ferry, just an expensive plane ride out.

There is no REAL gold rush in Nome. Nothing has changed in years except TV producers came to town. This is a "made for TV" gold rush drama show. Just about as much truth to this gold rush as there is in the "National Enquirer."

Because "inquiring minds " want to know. Well now you know. The gold rush in Alaska is about the same as anywhere in the western or south-eastern US. Alaska just has the producers of these "Gold Rush" programs as a publicist. You haven't heard about the gold rush in the lower 48?
That is because there is no TV producers hyping a fantasy lifestyle to people desperate for serious money like they are doing with Alaska gold. It is all the same and in the lower 48, it is actually better.

Here is why. Longer season. Easier access. Supplies close and inexpensive compared to Alaska. Camping is far more comfortable in the lower 48. Fewer bears; lots fewer. Your friends and family can visit you at the diggings without spending enormous amounts on money on plane tickets. Equipment readily available at much lower prices. Repair parts don't need to be flown 1000-4000 miles at high expense to get you operational again.

Remember this, if you run out of money in Nome or most of Alaska for that matter, you are sooo screwed. And I can almost guarantee you that you will spend every cent and leave broker than you ever were before you came up with this silly notion. Newbies rarely hit it, even us old timers have difficulty hitting it. I can stay in beans, but little else.

Crawl before you walk, walk before you run. Never panned, but wanna dredge. Join a club and get some skills developed.

Here is a good rule of thumb: if you are going to spend more than $1000 on your own gold mining equipment, don't spend more than 10 times as much as the value of the total amount of gold you've found in your lifetime. So if you've only found a total of 1ozt in your entire life, don't spend more than $15,000 on gold mining equipment. A decent 6" setup for Nome will cost at least $35k for the dredge and everything you need and shipping it up.

I get a kick (and am saddened) by these guys that think they will be doing 100ozt/month cleanups, when they have never done, nor do they even know how to do a 10ozt cleanup.

I thought I had covered these topics more thoroughly than you found, maybe that was on the AMDS forum http://www.akmining.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/7-AMDS-Prospecting-Forum with the same username.

There are a couple non-fee areas offshore Nome, "East Rec Area" and "West Rec Area" but they have been picked over quite heavily. East Rec has been restricted to 8" and smaller for 12 years, and West Rec used to be pounded by some 10", a 12", and the Christine Rose, but as of last year is restricted to 6" only. These non-fee areas still have the 3% Alaska mining tax, and the 3% Alaska mining royalty tax, and the $150 permit, and the $25 DMV boat license, and the other fees and costs for dredge parking, storage, etc, etc, etc.

The owners of the beach that allowed camping in the past have said that they won't be allowing camping this year, but may put in an actual camp ground for 2013.

If you are interested in spending lots of money in Nome no matter what, then I suggest trying the GPAA camp (GPAA Alaska Expedition); it is the cheapest way to see Nome, learn about gold mining, and get a couple pennyweight of gold a week. Or waiting until July. Last year, 75% of new dredgers sold out and went home by the end of July when they realized that failed and decided to cut their losses and get a paying job.

Thanks for the added information ak diver, I read all the post i could fine relating to the subject you had replied but your last post answered alot all the information i wanted to know thankyou.Im with you guys on this 100 percent comming to nome with out a plan or funds wouldent be the smartest idea, Though i am glad i found out how much a dredge would cost. And im with you overtheedge...Staying in the lower 48 and dredging here would be the thing to do first. I agree, i looked into the GPAA, and most likely will join with them, sometime... Im hopeing to get in the creeks and streams this summer thanks guys!
