What is false bedrock? Is there gold to be found under it?

I was digging in a gravel bottomed creek but could only find 1 gold color out of like 50 spots where I sampled. Then I found what looked like a brown mud/clay bottom, but hard and sticky. There was gravel in it which I panned out but still no gold. I only dug into it about a foot.Should I have kept digging deeper? My friend found a spot like this in another creek, dug thru the hard mud layer and found a 2nd gravel/cobblestone layer underneath and started finding some large gold flakes and pickers. The only real bedrock I have seen in this creek is under the highway bridge a mile upstream.
Any tips for dealing with this false bedrock/dense mud layer would be appreciated?

False bedrock is a hard clay layer in gravel. Gold can settle on it, and not penetrate any further. However, this doesn't mean all false bedrock layers have gold, and it also doesn't mean there wouldn't be any gold on the real bedrock lying beneath. And sometimes BOTH the false bedrock, and the real bedrock, have gold...

Only one way to find out: dig!

I found a layer of false bedrock on my claims, it was either ash or clay, and when I dug through it I found a narrow Tertiary age channel with some very rich material, dark red and somewhat clayey.

So it is worth it to dig through and see.

tvanwho, what makes you think there is any gold there. If I took 50 samples and did not find any gold, I would go somewhere else. Does the creek have a reputation for having gold?

Unless I found much more gold than you have above the false bedrock, I would not consider digging thru it.
Go get a better creek.

I know this is Alaska (N.America) you are referring to but in South America after breaking through the false bedrock layers (catch-cow) is where we find our biggest values!

Personally if I only found 1 speck of gold out of 50 sample holes I would move to that creek your friend was on but before up and move I would do like Dennis said it may not hurt just to punch one hole through to the bottom just to see what is there.
