The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will hold a “Water Sampling Workshop for Placer Mine Wastewater Discharge Permits” in both Anchorage and Fairbanks this spring. The workshop is for operators covered under the Mechanical Placer Miners General Permit (AKG370000) and anyone else interested the permit. The first hour or so will be spent in the classroom with a review of permit requirements. The second hour will be a “hands-on” session with instruction on how to collect samples and an opportunity to become familiar sample equipment (e.g. turbidometer, Imhoff cone). If conditions allow, the sample portion would be held on the stream bank. The workshop is anticipated to run 2 hours; however, it may run longer if needed.
Because suction dredge permits require only visual, or no, monitoring, the workshop may not be relevant to placer miners who only suction dredge. However, it may be of interest to those who have interest in a larger open-cut operation Anchorage – Campbell Creek Science Center – Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 11:00am to 3:00pm Fairbanks – Carlson Center – Buswell Room – April 29, 2013 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm |
