A year ago there was an ad on here [metal flowers, I think] looking for miners and such. I ignored it.
Surprisingly, I got caught up in the final pick through guiding the producer on the pilot. Anyway, here is a sneak-peek of what will premier Sunday evening: http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/ice-cold-gold

Well, I have been watching this thread for some kind of reaction, comment, etc.
I spent 6 months in Sondestrom Greenland back in another lifetime. I flew on a C130 from Elmendorf AFB - over Baffin Bay to Sonde. There's reality television i.e. Gold Rush - Alaska and then there's fantasy television i.e. Cowboys stumbling around on rock piles in Greenland and the related drama. Greenland has a population of 55,000 people. I don't have a breakdown - but it's mostly populated by indigenous native Eskimos. They are very nice folks to get to know - but outsiders are more a curiosity. I got 1000 questions about Alaskan natives. If people think Alaska represents a logistics problem... You haven't seen anything! At Sondestrom, ONE ship comes in ONCE a year loaded with alcohol. I'm not talking about rubbing alcohol. Scandanavian Airlines flies freight and passengers to and through Sondestrom. So you discovered GOLD, Diamonds, Rubies in Greenland... You want an exercise in logistics? - Geowizard www.alaska-gold.com |

Geo Jim,
It's bound to be "entertaining". Everyone is welcome to visit Ophir. You can see a modest, struggling for survival gold mining operation at work. We need all the help we can get feeding the mosquitos! - Geowizard www.alaska-gold.com www.ophir-alaska.com www.moore-creek.com |

Ice Cold Gold is well done.! The $250 tarp is probably realistic. Exploration in Greenland can't be for the faint of heart when it's time to pay up at the cash register! The unfortunate reality in a cold climate is the everpresent threat of death from hypothermia. There are no trees in Greenland! Ice Cold Gold has plenty of drama. Yes, a hot shower is a luxury. Yes, a hot shower is a necessity. The group was shown having an outdoor barbeque of raindeer meat. So, you need at least one pallet of firestarter and charcoal if you plan on a couple months of surviival - just to cook hot food! Communications isn't an issue? Yes, well, you do have a production crew and - like survivor man, the actors are never in danger. It's TV! ![]() Cool! - Geowizard |

Well I found the first show to be interesting.
Sadly, the lack of pre-trip planning shows a real lack of knowledge of the type of environment they were headed out into. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the shows. Dickb  |

That must have been terrifying! (biting my finger nails) So the experienced "Hardrock miners" were wearing cowboy hats! and... and... and.. What about skull fractures with no comm? What about Triage? I have two MSHA Certified Triage First Aid Kits at my mine. You wanna borrow one? That way you can wrap their skull up and put the cowboy hat back on! Maybe that part's on episode three... - Geowizard |

I don't know when exploration for gold, diamonds and rubies began in Greenland. When I was at Sondrestrom AB, (Greenland) in 1973, I was an Avionics Tech. A pilot with a mining company came into the shop one day and asked if I could fix the VHF radio on their helicopter. I fixed the problem. He was happy. So, 40 years ago, there were geologists exploring Greenland for gems and minerals. I assumed then that they were the first, because everything was a new concept and after all there was no life on earth before me. Now 40 years later, a new group of hatchlings are scouring the ground in Greenland, convinced, they have discovered a new concept and there was no life on earth before them. - Geowizard www.alaska-gold.com |

I think the points made are reasonable and objective. Any rational adult would look at this example of "reality television" with speculation. When it becomes obvious that a presentation doesn't reflect reality - then it becomes fantasy television. Those that participate in fantasy should be willing to own up to the questionable antics that may be entertaining yet demonstrate the wrong behavior. Wrong behavior is bad behavior. Too many young adults view television as a source of learning. If it's called "reality television", they accept it as reality and go into "learn mode". Learned "BAD" behavior is a "BAD" thing. It's not ME being bad. Although I may be labelled a bad person for being "combative". WE as a group of responsible adults should join together to combat "BAD" behavior in the form of training others to learn stupid behavior or imply to the world at large, that mining efforts are stupid. For that, I offer no apology. - Geowizard www.alaska-gold.com |

I hope everyone was watching the second episode! I'll spare the review and skip to geophysics. ![]() So, we spend big bucks to go for a long walk on an island nobody has ever visited, looking for gold and rubies and diamonds. Has anyone thought about "geophysics"? It's all been flown! http://www.geus.dk/minex/go22.pdf Remember - you saw it here on the AGF first! - Geowizard www.alaska-gold.com |
