12V compressor diving

Hi, another questions - what about electric powered compressor systems, like THIS I know, that mostly is used compressor powered directly form dredge engine, but this can be also operated without dredge. Any ideas, or experiences?

No direct experience with this one but some observations....

1. The quality level looks like something you would buy at Harbor Freight. I love HF but I don't think I would depend on a diving compressor from there. Your results may vary.

2. Its rated for 5 meters (16 feet) depth which is not very much. I would expect that you could leisurely swim around near the surface but if you start exerting yourself or try going deeper you will be running out of air. Adding a reserve air tank will help a little.

3. It seems a bit overpriced

It could work perfect for you or not at all. It all depends on what you plan to do

A different ebay ad for the same pump claimed 18 psi @ 6 cfm. Compare this to a T-80, 40 psi @ 1.6 cfm.
The t-80 has significantly more pressure but far less cfm.

A field test is in order

Sometimes descriptions are telling. If the product is for a "pool" then it probably isn't robust enough for general dredging. Color me skeptical as well.

The other day on gold fever the guy was dredging a river in California (must be before the ban) and he got really good nuggets because they were out of reach of the old timers. Got to figure that if you were lucky enough to have a situation where the river was going underground then maybe it hadn't been mined yet.

Here in Florida people die in underwater caves all the time. Most are using rebreathers which are pretty dangerous compared to a hookah. I wouldn't want a marginal or underpowered air pump running my hookah. Nothing wrong with a substantial 12V air pump though.

And what about 12V electric hookah system for dredging generally?

The problem with battery powered hooka is that you need about 1.5-2hp to run a pump of decent capacity. A motor that big will eat batteries. I looked up a different 12v hooka system (with better specs) and they publish battery life at 1 hour 20 minutes for a group 27 battery. When that is dead you carry the battery out, charge it and carry it back and your day is done.
For the same weight and cost you can run a T-80 on a gas motor for as long as your fuel holds out

When you are dredging you are working hard and using a LOT of air. Nothing takes your strength and enthusiasm more than having to gasp for air and stop what you are doing so the exertion level matches your air supply.

The deeper you dive the amount of air you require on every breath increases substantially due to compression and continues to increase with more depth.

Dont cut corners on your air supply
