Joe,
The first part of the box is 8 inches of ribbed mat followed with open moss under riffles.

Problem with the Gold Hog mat, there was almost nothing in it. Everything was going out...gravels, sands and gold if there was any.... no packing.

Too much water was not the problem as we "just" have enough due to pump size. The box has approx. 1.25" drop per foot so it is not too steep.
Most of the gold stops in the first 12"

I'm sure the Gold Hog mat works but not in this instance.

We just ended up pulling the Gold Hog mat and put the raised expanded and moss back in.

Harry,

It sounds as though you are the one in a million (I always thought so, anyway) that has the perfect Moss 'n Expanded system. :devil:

I still think that the Hog mats were just trying to run in a wrong "Moss" style environment. Now, what works for you is something that is uniquely tuned to moss 'n expanded -- and that being the case --- Well Done, Press on! :clap:

I saw "Doc", in one of his videos, explain that too much or too little water flow will scour the Hog mats. Of course, that is what everyone tries to avoid and the net result is that tuning of the mats to retain Gold and pass almost everything else is the end goal. Too steep or too shallow pitch either scours or packs the "tween spaces as well.

Joe

Yup.... What Joe said......:smile:
What works for one kind of gold and aggregate may not be the best choice in another... every system has to be tuned to the location..... And apparently moss and expanded seems to work the best for you.... Keep up the good work.. :doublethumbsup:

I guess I could have hinged the box and worked with the slope but I didn't think it was worth the trouble...

Cocoa mats?

Not much discussion about Cocoa mats. :confused:

I know of a few commercial wash plants that use cocoa mats. These mats have caught a lot of GOLD over the years!

For the nay sayers;

Watch the RMS Ross Box video with close attention to the mat that is used.

You might also note the amount of GOLD. :smile:

"Everything Goes" sluice box;

There are sluice boxes that handle everything!

A common example is the suction dredge sluice. Everything goes! The Mini Six that I have in Alaska is a triple over-under (aka three stage) design that is popular with modern dredges. The top is covered with coarse screen. All of the coarse material rolls over the top. There are coarse modified Hungarian riffles to catch nuggets. There's a middle sluice that handles intermediate size that doesn't pass the intermediate screen. Everything that passes the intermediate screen goes to the fine gold sluice at the bottom. Everything goes! :smile:
