Big Boy Toys Nome AK

Hello,

I'm the lucky guy that got the job on the 10" dredge that geojim posted an ad about a while back. Here are some pictures of the rigs working and a few not working up here this year.

Enjoy...

Our rig:

Amen to that!! What a great display of American ingenuity and determination. Makes all my little contraptions look like child's play. Would love to know what the gold looks like that some of those dredges pull up.

Here is some gold that was too small to make it up the wheel. Most the gold in Nome is small, with a small nugget now and then.

Kevy,

Spectacular and fascinating. Some old and some new from my visit last year. Most appreciate your taking the pics and posting them, here. Many of these are super-sophisticated and expensive, even tho they may look a bit rube goldberg-ish.

Has the sub been out, yet? I assume the mast is a snorkle for engine exhaust and fresh air? And also assume it processes the slurry right on-board the machine? Is there a tender or is it self sufficient? Does it just walk off the shore and out to the dredge site, or does it get towed back to the harbor every day? As you can see, I'm most curious!

I went out on the 12" "Eureka" dredge last year- it looks alot like John and Andy's "Goldfish", but the house is yellow plywood. Is that dredge operating this year? I still need to edit the videos and put on YouTube so all can see.

I'm glad you got on the dredge- another example of how valuable this forum is.

Re: Big Boy Toys Nome AK

these are some great pictures, there is one thing that I have seen on a few of the dredges is at the back of the sluice there is a board or block of some kind to deflect the tailings.. I guess my question is why ???

Thank you Kev, those are great pics and very interesting to see the approach of a number of miners.

With the pic of the gold it is quite something to see the gold molded onto/into (?) the lead shot! That is something new to me.

Do you get much mercury out in the ocean?

Bill-cr:

Good eye.

The board on the back of the sluice boxes is a thrust deflector. One major difference with ocean dredging vs. river dredging (one difference amongst many), is that the current is not always the same direction, or even present. Without a thrust deflector all that water coming off the box will sometimes push the dredge forward onto/over/past the diver.

Great Pics Kev, It was nice meeting you this summer as well. You did get some classics like the "mad max" machine, from a few years back to the new submarine dredge. To pop and son, Dan has the Eureka dredge for sale, it didnt make it into the water this year. If your interested Ive got his number in montana.later Dan

Ditto the praise and thanks above. This ought to be an annual posting. I posted pictures of the interesting sea-going dredges at Nome which I shot three years ago. I recognize a dredge or two from my pictures. They are looking a bit weather-beaten and rusty, but still up there. Cool, thanks for the pics.

Re: Big Boy Toys Nome AK

Pop and Son,

I have not seen the sub outside of the harbor yet, but I have seen it conducting tests inside the harbor for the last couple weeks. I'll try to get a few more pictures and some video when I get a chance.

As far as I can tell the operators window is about 6 feet from the nozzle. I have not seen anyone in a wetsuit on the unit yet so I don't know how they will treat rock jams. The unit has a tractor base and it crawls off the beach right into the water. Once floating it has two props, one on either side. I have not been close enough to tell, but I would guess it processes the material underwater somehow.

I have watched and enjoyed all your videos multiple times. One day I went over to Dale's big blue fab shop west of the harbor to take some pictures of the 2 million dollar big water wheel dredge that never really worked, and I found Miner Mike working on one of his 2 dredges for his 55' offshore claims. I said,"hey, I recognize you." I told him how I saw him on your videos on the net and we talked for a little bit. His ice rig is kind of interesting.

I heard you were from Wa State somewhere. What city do you call home? I live east of Federal Way on Lake Tapps. I plan on being a regular up here every summer so maybe we'll bump into eachother some day. I have a few videos on youtube under the name exanchorite if you're interested.

Later

-Kevin

Hey Greg,

The gold in the picture is so fine that I was having problems with it floating so I poured in some dish soap to break the surface tension. The gold sticking to the lead shot is the dish soap that has not disolved yet.

I have not seen any amalgamated gold yet, but I have found some relics from the past.

Hey Dan,

If Pop and Son is not interested in the Eureka dredge I might want to take a look at it. Could you PM me Dan's number when you get a chance? Might be a few nice 8's for sale in CA this winter as well.

Thanks

-Kevin
