Hi,

Sad day. I hate to be a bummer, but it would seem to be inevitable that suction dredging eventually be banned in California. You have such a small number of dredgers in the middle of vast numbers of environmentalists. And vast numbers of people who assume that dredging does harm when study after study after study has shown otherwise.

I will go out on a limb and venture to say that the "greenies" do not pay attention or care what studies say. They have their own mind set and tunnel vision. Sorry Cali dredgers. As Steve said, it was inevitable.

We don't have to win every battle, just the lawsuit in the courts

We need to Help PLP fund these lawsuits.

Today the dredge battle may be in a california court but tomorrow it may be in another state court.

When California sneezes, the other states just might catch a cold! I hope this doesn't spreed to the other states so let's see
what is the next most liberal gold state on the list?
I can picture guy's dropping their buddy off with the equipment, driving down the road and riding a 10 speed back to the drop off site so they can dredge without giving their positions away. I remember Redpaw Dave telling me about the time he and some friends were way up on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River (read:wilderness designated area) here in the LA area and were dredging after midnight. True story and they didn't get caught, funny as heck. I hope this isn't the future for dredgers, would kinda suck. Most guy's I know here in the LA area prospect and mine under the radar anyway, just the way it is. I like Hoser Johns idea, have a buddy be the lookout.

Hi,

The crazy thing is they are supposedly trying to protect salmon. But the bill shuts down all dredging on all creeks. Surely there is dredging going on in locations with no salmon. Why close everything?

In Alaska we have already addressed the salmon issue. The Kenai River was closed to dredging long ago, as were areas deemed as critical salmon habitat, such as Upper Granite Creek. Other salmon bearing streams have very limited dredging seasons. Luckily we have a huge number of gold bearing streams that simply do not have any salmon runs.

Steve,

Meanwhile here in California, the Indians will still be fishing salmon with their nets which obviously is doing more to endanger the fish than dredging. There needs to be a lawsuit to stop them from net fishing if the salmon are truly in danger, otherwise gentlemen, start your dredges!

That's why I have an "RIU" (River Improvement Unit )and not a dredge! It takes all the iron and mercury out of the streams and redistributes food to the fish plus creates area's for them to spawn and grow.

Re: ITS Over ! SB 670 we lose

This is a sad turn of events. I am certin that this "SB" is a compltely emotional response and has no logical merit.
That said, it is important to understand that the same type of people who got this bill passed are becoming more prevalent in Alaska. I am a life long resident of Alaska and I have watched these people "migrate" to our once fine state. Look at the strangle hold they have gotten on the oil industry and influance they have gotten on projects like pebble mine. And I am talking about "locals" only. Not to mention the outside groups who plan to shut everything down that not only affects our state economy, but our enjoyment of life itself. They will be here soon doing the same thing with the same arguements. Mark my words, it won't be long. The time to act on this is now before they do. If they act first, we will loose.

And if they win, it won't just be suction dredging that will be gone. No sir, it could be a whole host of things that enviromentalist despise; mining, snomachining, hunting, boating, offroad vehicles, fishing, you name it. They get in here any more than they have, it's done.

The enviromentalist movment is the greatest threat to freedom this country has ever seen, and probably the most powerful. Sorry to sound so bleak and dire, but that's the way I see it.

Questions I Have...

Ok, so the Cal. judge and the governor have decided: there will be no dredging allowed in California until an environmental impact study on the effects of dredging on salmon is studied and reviewed. Somebody on the 49'ers forum asked a darn good question:
HOW do they propose to accomplish this study, since no dredging is currently allowed? Who will do the study? Are they going to hire real dredgers with experience, or use somebody with zero experience dredging? Will the person(s) doing the study have neutral feelings (bias) about dredging? Are they going to use studies done in other states? (which might have entirely different conditions)
