cold water and hearing loss

went to the ear doc the other day because i had a ear infection that was real slow going away. this guy was born , raised and educated in costa rica. he took 1 look at the inside of my ears and told me i had a lot of damage to my ear from cold water diving. first time i had ever been to him and he new no back ground on me but knew that i had dove in cold water. has any body else have hearing loss or problems from cold water diving ? i had never heard of this. how about you ? i always blamed not being able to hear on rock and roll.

Re: cold water and hearing loss

Very common with surfers that surf in colder waters. Takes years to develop but over time hearing loss will develop. Can be repaired with surgery now. Mark

Re: cold water and hearing loss

I have been cold water dredging since the early 70's, this is the first I have heard of it.
a friend of mine was a commercial diver now the boss on a dive ship working with other divers and he has never heard of it..... really surprised me a doctor from the tropics tells me my ear problems are caused by cold water diving. thought I would have heard ( i hope ) about this before.

I have to wonder if this could be averted by simply wearing cheap 25-cent foam ear plugs...

Re: cold water and hearing loss

I am thinking that this has more to do with the way a person tends to clench their jaw when cold. Having a mouthpiece from any type of breathing apparatus will make it worse too as you are then biting down on something, rather than just your teeth being tight together. This causes a gross misalignment of the jaw, and all of the associated tissue/bone structure. Potentially, this will damage muscle and connective tissue, effecting the way the bones of the inner ear operate. I do remember learning/hearing something about this years ago, possibly in some service related training, but am speculating too.
