Gem stones in Alaska

Hey guys! I gots a question for ya'll. Are there any gem stones that a guy should be keeping an eye out for while out looking for that yellow, shiny stuff? I know that I have seen a garnett claim for sale down in SE Alaska, but I havn't found any information of gem stones any where else. The places where I usually go (Crow creek, Bertha creek, and Sixmile) I don't think have any, but what about elsewhere????

Gemstones are like gold, It is where you find them.
I mine generally around Anchorage, Very little minerals found other than hematite or magnetite that you find in the pan. I look for gold, Anything else i will find and keep. When roaming around Alaska, I have found subgrade sapphires at Rock creek, which is neer Nabesna Village on the way to Valdez. There is good garnets found at local creeks around Tok, Alaska, Where i found more garnets than gold. Best thing to post is what exactly are you looking for?

Not really looking for anything specific, just general knowledge. You can't look for somthing if you don't know that it may be there. Just curious.

Hi,

Garnet is fairly common in Alaska but also generally low grade. There is jade in the Kobuk area and elsewhere. Tourmaline in the Black Rapids area. A few diamonds have been found. But on the whole valuable gemstones are extremely rare in Alaska.

There are many precious and semi-precious gems and minerals to be found in Alaska. I know, because I wrote a book about them. I have found Jade (Nephrite), Thundereggs with Amethyst, Rhodonite, Rhodochrosite, Zircon, Topaz, Serpentine, Steatite, Hematite, Chrysocholla, Jaspers, Tourmaline, Sapphire, Garnets, and many others, as well as fossils.

Some 20-odd years ago, I took a prospecting course taught by Leo Mark Anthony. One day he showed a vial containing two rough diamonds that he said he'd found in Alaska. (but he wouldn't say where)
I remember the stones were small (like 1/8"), and had the classic octahedron shape of a rough diamond. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octahedron

Yeah, I had heard on Rick Rydell's radio show one morning on my way to work that somebody was looking into the possibility of finding diamonds somewhere around Shulin lake. Don't know if it is true or not.

Re: Gem stones in Alaska

The advice given above, which is generally to keep your eyes open, but not expect a whole lot, is pretty good. I'm looking forward to prospecting in Alaska. It's easy to overlook small gemstones. I stopped at Gem Mountain in Montana on my way back from nearly a month in the Pacific Northwest, back on the last day of July. I wound up with the largest sapphire found that day, a flawless stone of very good color, and it will be set in a white gold ring for a non-traditional engagement ring when my girlfriend spends two weeks with me at Christmas. I was amazed at how few gems were found by most of the people working the Gem Mountain gravel. Hardly anyone was patient and careful enough to examine small amounts at a time, and wound up just searching the top of an improperly done "upside-down cake" pile. One lady next to me got only one sapphire, a very small one, out of her bucket. I rushed through my three buckets to get on the road again, and because I was going to take my gravel home with me to re-examine. But I got forty sapphires weighing about twenty-seven carats on my day at the mine, and I found more than a dozen other sapphires when I rechecked the gravel a few days ago. We would slow down to a pitiful crawl if we tried to look for every possible gemstone in our quest for gold, but it sure doesn't hurt to keep our eyes open.

Yeah, see, that's kinda what i was getting at when I posted this question. Since I am new to this mining thing, I don't really know what to look for when it come to stuff other than gold. Although I had some good luck ,for me at least, down at Bertha creek today. Even found some gold in a chunk of quartz!!!! It was a good day out for me!
