st ives

i live in st ives chase, in the north shore, and i have been trying to develop the crags there but as i am just one person, its hard to get to all the climbs and climb them.
The routes are all bouldering routes with grades (so far) from V0-v10. the climbs are spread around the stives chase area.
There are climbs down the warrimoo track (500m or further) and down the track near the scout hall on warrimoo road, also if your an uber *ninjaargh then you can climb the few routes in peoples back yards, like the one in my backyard (rambunctious retard V3).
if you are interested in the area, email me: and i will give you further info.

*ninjaargh: the combo of pirate and ninja

Re: st ives

just saying, the roof is pretty frickin bare. someone would have to be a very good climber if they where even get off the ground.
also, just pointng out that this cave isnt down the warrimoo track, its down a mountain bike track that runs behind the local scout hall... and the best walls/problems in the area are not in the cave, the best are on the random little buttresses an boulders that surround the area.

i also think its not worth checking it out ... due to the epic lack of holds in the cave and the general quality of some of the climbs

St Ives Stone

I was working in the st ives area, and spent a few hrs crag hunting in different spots, I was suprised at how much rock was around, just didnt find anything really cool, but i managed to find this spot next to the road, with about 10 problems, v1 - v7.

Access is 1 minute, landings are flat ground, sensible height, and the rock is not bad, what makes it cool is the strange featured mantle topouts.

Re: st ives

i know this thread has been dead for a few years, but i recently did another walk down through st ives and found some pretty incredible lines.

this line is down the tributary for the main rivery thing. getting there is pretty tiring and quite dodgy, so that probably one of the reasons its unclimbed. the roof was about 15m at its peak and the stone looked pretty good. the surrounding lake bed has a couple of boulder problems that could be interesting as well.

on the other side of the stream thing, theres a huge sandstone cliff thats easily visible from the track, but nearly impossible to get to, if some one wants to spend a weekend trying to access it, be my guest.

this was just a rad little line i stumbled across on my way down the track (to get to it, you take a right at the stone seat and follow the cliff band just before the track starts to get really steep) the holds look decent, but i havent really given it a go at all.

i havent been climbing in around 3 years now, but i would hate to see these spots go unclimbed. the entire st ives bushland area is filled with sand stone climbing and i seriously recommend you check it out, you will not be disappointing

cheers, Dylan

It's very hard to get a feeling of the scale from the photo. The map is too small to make out. Why not post a google maps link ?

Re: st ives

ok, i went back the other day (access, for the record, is absolute shite) and got another shot of the main wall with my bag in it for some scale:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/2cb4a059c4be9a1a91ce491bdc5d7ab4/tumblr_mfy31lpjfw1qfduweo1_500.jpg

as for a link to the spot:

-33.690246,151.165953

its really just a case of going left when you reach the bottom of the track where you cross the river and following the creek bed until you get here. theres a metric F#$K ton of rock, but this seemed to be the main attraction.

good luck finding the spot and climbing it.

Re: st ives

hey guys,

still havent been able to climb since about 2009, but the climbs listed in this thread are all still there. ive recently been doing some work around the area and ive found another really genuinely special cliff band that needs some development.

the cliff in question is about 30m across and has a small roof about 3 ft off the ground then a sloping vertical cliff that rises to about 10m at the highest point. past a certain point the cliff is covered in plants, so topping out is a must. theres a diverse range of climbs, from some crimpy looking things to big slopers. theres even a small roof traverse thats very close to the ground that im sure someone would be keen to try.

heres a map of where it is, enjoy.
