G'day everyone
For those of you who have climbed at nowra, what do you think of the grades.it was my first time down there this long weekend, we camped at the ski park saturday night. On the way down there my mate doughy told me to add two grades to everything down there. i didn't belive him at first but at the end of our weekend it was true i have never peeled off so many climbs, then again shit did we climb a hell of alot. Areas on our hit list was south central, the grotto and thompsons point. Well getting to the point are nowra grades truely harder than sydney and the mountians what do you think. regards christian lopez |

there are some classic sandbags at nowra. once you know where they are you to can join in the fun. most of the grades are ok though.

or maybe Blueys climbs are easier for the grade. Personally I cant tell much difference. |

I tend to think that Nowra has very few soft climbs and a few sandbags. Most of the climbs just feel solid for the grade.
When you first go to nowra though I think it feels desperate as the holds are generally a bit slopier, and if the conditions aren't right, they suddenly jump a grade or two. On a nice cool day with a bit of a breeze there aren't too many sandbags. |

After spending most winters climbing/bouldering in Nowra over the past 6 years and then spending most weekends in the Mtns this summer, I'd say that Nowra grades are much stiffer. The routes in the mountains tend to be longer, endurance based were as Nowra on average is shorter more power or power endurance. South Central is definitely the place to see if you're solid at a particular grade.

Dudes dudes dudes,
everyone gets suckered into making that infamous Grades at Nowra V Mountains comparison. you need to re-think it. I can go to Nowra with a 35m rope and do just about everything. If I went to the mountains with that, I'd be getting dropped off my rope all the time (some people have been trying to do this for years..but I digress) Nowra is shorter and more powerful, and to come up to the grade, the individual moves have to be harder to make up for the lack of height. I think you can get also get away with scrappy technique on alot of things. at Nowra. Technique, however relates to the different style of sandstone. (river carved) So I would define Nowra as a shorter, more powerful and bouldery kind of area where you can thud your way up things. The Mountains: endurance and route fitness is a factor on a lot of the typical lines in this area. Climbs are generally longer with less powerful moves, but more of them. Alot of the time its the endurance factor that will shut you down on a mountains route, not that the move is too hard. I personally find mountains sandstone more open to a variety of moves because of the difference in sandstone. Its apalachin formed so you tend to get waves, breaks, scoops, flakes, crimps and all things beautiful in climbing. It opens up a real variety of climbing movements, which means if you are technically profficient, you will be able to survive longer on a route in this area than simply thundering up a 9m ass kicker at Nowra. In addition to this equation, where you spend the majority of your climb time is a huge factor. Its true that you get used to an area or a certain style. I've heard ot the hard core Centennial Glenn crew zotting down to Arapiles and getting spanked of their na na, on stuff well below their ability. Same goes, iF you live in Woolongong and have spent 3/4 of your life at the Grotto, if you step out of your comfort zone and go to the moutains for a weekend, be prepared to get shut down. In Summary I would not classify Nowra has "harder" than the mountains grade wise. I would class it as "different" and depending on peoples personal preference and what their strengths are (i.e bouldery or "routey") you will definately find it easier for yourself at one area over the other. |

Dear Nick,
you read this correctly and it may be clear that I have a definate preferance for Mountains routes cause I suck at short hard bouldery stuff. Got to work on your weaknesses though, right? say, Have you been looking up my crag account again? I already told you on the crag.com, that I don't want to go out with you, I don't want to kiss you, and I don't want to have a sleep over at your place this weekend!. I know you think its funny when we go to Celebrity crag and you keep trying to lower me onto that sharp tree branch of that climb called "anal leakage", all the while your giggling and smiling like a cheshire cat!, as if you were strangely excited about the predicament??. I dont like that sort of thing and I'm just not your type so please stop harrasing me. |
