Oxygen Underscores Commitment to Original Programming With Two New Comedy Series - "O2Be" and "Girls Behaving Badly"
"O2Be" - The New Series From THE DAILY SHOW Alums Lizz Winstead and Brian Unger
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 2002-- Additional Acquisition of "Absolutely Fabulous"

Anchors New Weekend Comedy Block

Oxygen Media is continuing its investment in original programming by launching a comedy block premiering Sunday, September 22, it was announced today by Debby Beece, President of Programming, Oxygen.

Airing weekly on Sundays beginning at 7:00 p.m.*, this comedy block debuts with three series new to Oxygen - "Girls Behaving Badly" (7:00 p.m.), "O2Be" (7:30 p.m.) and two back-to-back episodes of "Absolutely Fabulous" (8:00 - 9:00 p.m.) Two of the three weekly half-hour shows are original series - "O2Be" and "Girls Behaving Badly."

"O2Be" is a satire of morning TV geared towards women. The series is produced by Winstead and Unger's Payload Industries, formed in 1999. Winstead and Unger were formerly at Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" as co-creator and producer and correspondent (respectively). "Girls Behaving Badly" is an edgy new comedy show with a decidedly different point of view. This all-female cast turns the table on female stereotypes as they use hidden cameras to catch people in embarrassing, intimate and surprisingly racy situations. "Girls" comes from ZOO Productions, best known for their MTV Spring Break and Summer Beach House specials. Anchoring Oxygen's new comedy block is the smash-hit comedy series from the UK, "Absolutely Fabulous."

"We think this comedy block will differentiate us from the other women's networks," said Beece. "Our audience is looking for smart, off-beat comedy - and they want to see women at the center of that comedy. The Oxygen viewer tends to skew a little younger than other women's networks - and they are looking for programming with a little edge. That's what we set out to do in creating this block and we're hopeful that we've hit the right note with these three funny new shows."

"O2Be" is executive produced by and stars Lizz Winstead and Brian Unger. In addition to parodying the conventions of popular daytime TV shows, it satirizes the glut of media urging women to transform their looks, their homes and their relationships into something better - something often unattainable. As the title further states: "O2Be...prettier, richer, sexier, thinner...anyone but me."

"Foremost, this is a comedy," stated Lizz Winstead. "Brian and I saw inherent comedy in the growing number of daytime shows that take very seriously their mission to not only inform women, but literally `form' women." Unger adds, "Earnestly, daytime TV attempts to build a `better' woman and solve their problems. `O2Be' doesn't offer any solutions or help for women. We're making a show that laughs at all the heavy-handedness -- directed at women who don't need a book club to tell them what to read or a TV shrink because they pay for one on their own." Winstead added, "We're grateful to Oxygen for taking the bold step in allowing us to satirize the genre."

"O2Be" satirically celebrates the over-saturation of self-help, dieting and relationships and mocks the conspicuous consumption of fashion and celebrity -- a signature segment being a parody of celebrity profiles called "Inanimate Portrait," written in collaboration with the celebrities themselves. In the premiere episode, actress Téa Leoni exclusively reveals her heartbreaking battle with morbid obesity -- realizing one day after the birth of her first child, she had "ballooned" up to 129 lbs.

Misleading lead-in: a mini-rant

Thanks, Jamie.

Gotta admit, I'm still ticked about the "misleading lead-in" for the AH-promo of the spot -- not for the Tea-stuff, but the whole bit where they tried to drag David into it, claiming that they would reveal "the obsession that nearly drove them apart," featuring a few David/Pat O'Brien-clips where David admitted to jealousy and what have you. There were no such David/Pat-features on the actual program, and thinking back on it now, it most likely was taken out of context from an XF-related interview or somesuch, as that's fairly easy to do.

I realize that the whole point behind such a ruse was to get everyone to watch, and I admit it -- it definitely worked for me, although I would have watched it on my own accord anyway. And yeah, once again, David is used for a selling point to get folks to watch and see what all the fuss is about. But you know, there are plenty of folks out there with big-enough imaginations, watching for the slightest hint of trouble, to stretch these types of things out of proportion and post every rumor under the sun without the aid of these types of shows. So at least imo, that type of ruse for the purpose of promotion is very frustrating.

Granted, I know there's really no such thing as truth in advertising, but still, a slight hint at least would be nice!
