I just did the drop-in pass to check things out. The tournent was in full swing and packed. The tables looked great, much better in person. There were a couple of ideas that I'm going to steal for my terrain pieces. Kudos to Cory for all the hard work he put into them.
The pick-up gaming was empty. Not a single person when I was there. There was a group playing D&D, and another playing something else. There were a couple of venders, The Comic Book Shoppe being the biggest and having some excelent deals. Highlight for me was when Cory was up on stage, asking the crowd skill testing questions for prizes. He asked an Eldar question, first response "It's Eldar, who cares?" - Krysdagger. He finally got the right answer he was looking for and tossed out the prize. Then some uber-nerd started arguing with Cory that his answer was wrong and that Cory's knowledge of Eldar fluff was lacking. The look on Cory's face was priceless. Cory in an incredible feat of self restraint did not put him in his place in front of the crowd. If only he wasn't in charge of the event, oh the fireworks we would have seen.... Overall, good times. I'll probably do more at the next one, as this one fell on a long weekend.

Those prize handouts were so totally unfair. I mean, sure, I won one, but still.
Absolutely cosmic production. Nothing going on for open gaming, unfortunatly, there seemed to be some interest, but no one interested in it at the same time. Hey, Cory, there's something. You were asking about ideas for the next one, you should setup some form of open gaming registry. Open it up about a week ahead of time, let people sign up with their name, their system, and when they plan to be there. Keep it open throughout the summit, so if someone's just dropped in for open gaming they can see who else is there. A couple of times people were like "So, anyone bring 40K?" and I'd be like "Not me but... hmm, he was around here a few minutes ago..." |

Thanks for the great day guys! The whole day ran super smooth. I only won one of four games, but in each case it was a close fight, and I learned a few more things about 5th ed.

In a room full of geeks that guy managed to look the geekiest
A couple suggestions for the next one would be to keep the microphone around for the whole day so everyone can hear the announcements and to keep playing some music. Both of those just seemed to disappear after lunch. It was also a little unfortunate not to see any pickup games or any warhammer fantasy being played. The whole event was awesome, though. I really liked the venue and it was great to see so many of my friends from DS there. Orbital should get a ton of kudos for all the work he put into it. I look forward to being at the next one.

Wasn't that impressive, Corey asked about pheonix lords, handed out prize, nerd started to argue about Striking Scorpions, Corey made a comment about wanting to get a date at some point in this city, so he wasn't going to geek-slap the kid down, nerd shut up and went back to his chair. |

I asked the squat questions (though referred to them as Demiurg as to make it look like I was being somewhat serious)
I also asked about Chaos dwarves

Want some pics? You got it.
The event was really great for me. I kept taking looks around the room, trying to gauge how people were feeling, what the temperature was, etc. and people were always smiling and laughing. That was what made me happy. Our sponsors were also amazing. Toys On Fire and The Comic Book Shoppe both gave us tons of stuff to just give away for free. Really nice. Games Workshop had those new Fantasy Chaos models and Chaos Codex, and they gave away tons of stuff as well as doing a QnA session (translation: They mentioned there were no Demiurg on the horizon). Reaper Mini gave us 108 bottles of paint and 40 miniatures for the participants to use as they wished... and they were even able to keep the minis after. This is pretty good stuff in my book. Almost everyone got to leave with something they didn't have when they came in. There were pickup games, but most of the people who would have liked them most were busy with the tournament while they were happening. There were several players who turned up with armies who were ready to play but didn't connect with the others who had armies... though some did. One thing I would have liked to see more of was Fantasy gaming. There was almost none, which was a surprise. The Phoenix Lord kid was no big deal. He was just being squeaky. The next one will be in February, and here are some details: - Lower admission fee. - It's 90% sure to be at the War Museum again (we like it there). - It will be two days long. - There will be Hall of Heroes events as well as Golden Marine. - It won't be on a holiday weekend. - In addition to what we were doing last time, there will be MTG, Historical War Gaming, Warmachine & Hordes and more RPGs. - There will be a lot more people. We're also working on getting an on-site preview of Dawn of War II. Yeah, you heard me.
