Hey guys,
After two trips to Great Britian in the last year I am totally in love with Wales. The countryside is *incredibly* beautiful, the people are great, as is their beer and food and their history is very interesting. I highly recommend a visit to Wales to anyone. Anyway, my trip there and resulting education of their history has inspired me to collect a Welsh army. Either from the late Iron Age -early Dark ages period, fighting against the occupying Romans or invading Saxons; or the Medieval period that saw two failed wars of independance against Edward 1 (Longshanks) I'm guessng that Warhammer Ancients is the best ruleset to go with, but any ideas for good miniature ranges out there for what I wanna do? Thanks! Nick CYMRU!!!!!

Hey, Nick! Welcome to WAB! At last, there is another potential opponent! Offhand, I think that the two best WAB supplements for what you want to game are Age of Arthur (early Dark Ages, from c. 400 AD - c. 600+ AD), and/or Shieldwall (later Dark Ages, from c. 600 AD - c. 1100 AD). I will double-check this evening, but I recall that AoA includes a British Kingdoms list (Celts who were still not overly influenced by the Romans); and do know that Shieldwall includes a specific Welsh list. I've lost track of the available figures, but AoA has stimulated a recent surge of new early Dark Age figures from lots of different manufacturers, including Gripping Beast and others. I will check this evening for some more, although there are the old standbys of The Foundry, with their current not-so-special Christmas 'special' (already!), and Old Glory, for which some ranges are ok, and the price is right, despite sometimes awkward poses. I would highly recommend joining this forum, and asking there, too: http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/ Many WAB authors, Rob Broom himself, and several figure sculptors also post there. These are probably the main specific sub-fora of interest for your project: http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=9 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=18 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=19 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=16 Note that the WAB 1.5 rulebook includes many of the WAB errata, as well as most all of the lists from the old Armies of Antiquity supplement. The errata are also available online from Warhammer Historical, so if you have WAB 1.0, there is no real need to buy 1.5, although 1.5 does also include some new rules for border skirmishes of 500 points or so ... Cheers! vonB. P.S.: I have some Vikings that await painting, and have been very slowly amassing Romano-Brits. (as Bretons) and a few Saxons. One of my friends has been working on the Picts. |

Here is the current Gripping Beast range of early Welsh:
http://www.grippingbeast.com/shop.php?CatID=215 You can also get them from North Bay Games & Hobbies: http://www.northbaygamesandhobbies.ca/ And GB have an American supplier, but their website would seem to be undergoing some maintenance: http://oldglory15s.com/ |

Age of Arthur does include a list that is called "The British and Welsh Kingdoms," and three of its four sub-lists are for Welsh kingdoms. The list's chronology covers 380-798 AD.
Shieldwall does have a "Kingdoms of the Welsh" list, which seems to cover 784-1066 AD. One great advantage of both supplements is that each allows for small contingents of allied and mercenary units, so that you can get some modelling and painting, not to mention fighting (style), variety in your army. The allies and mercenaries can also be a good springboard for starting another army in the same period. To the extent that the same Welsh figures can be used for both sub-periods, they would be a very good choice indeed. This is unlike Vikings, for example, who are stuck in the latter sub-period, and Romano-British, who are limited to the earlier one. |

Here are Old Glory's two packs of Welsh:
http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=172&pg=3 I have asked on the WAB forum about other figures - stay tuned. Incidentally, it would probably be best to get your hands on the supplement of your choice, before amassing hordes of figures. Fandom II may still have a copy or two of Age of Arthur left in stock. |

Thanks for all the info VonB.
I'll look into all that. I'll prolly go with Dark Ages Welsh as that was the time of "King Arthur" and the legend of Arthur was most likely based on a Welsh chieftan/commander. Both rangers looked pretty good, but Gripping Beast seemed to be a better quality than Old Glory. What do you think? Foundry is pretty good too, but more $$$. Does Fandom have any of these? I'll hgave to remember to call them tomorrow to see if they have any AoA books left. Cheers, Nick

You're welcome. If I were doing Welsh, I'd probably go with GB, possibly mixing some OG in the middle or back ranks for cheap ($0.60-$1.00 USD per figure, before shipping and taxes) fill and variety.
Yes, Foundry are $$$, and there are newer ranges that are often just as good, if not better. I don't think that Foundry even make Welsh as such, although some of their other figures might be 'recruited' for variety. Fandom stopped selling historicals (except for WAB books and FoW) years ago. For GB figures, I'd start with Terry at North Bay Games and Hobbies; OG15s once their website is back up; or GB in the UK. Neal at the Warstore may have them, too, as might some other retailers. OG have an 'OG army' deal whereby you join for something like $50 USD for a year, to get a 40% discount on all of their product. OG15s may have something similar. For either of these, be sure to ask them to ship by USPS instead of their UPS default. If you're not in a big hurry, I expect that they could also ship to a US address. Here's some inspiration from the WAB forum: http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1449 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1602 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1264 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1413 http://www.wabforum.sadwargamers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1138&start=0 |

Here's some inspiration from a recent Arthurian WAB event in the UK:
