Just a heads up for everyone, Dreampod 9 has released a new edition of their rules, they've cleaned up all the rules abuses and streamlined a bunch of things for the better. All in all an excellent evolution of their product. On the day it was released in ebook, it hit DriveThru RPG's #1 item and has stayed in the top ten since then. Here's the link if you feel like checking it out. Dreampod 9 will also be at Cangames for a tournament on saturday and demos through out the weekend(I think).

I really hope they are going to be doing demos at CanGames. I've always wanted to try out Heavy Gear, I love their mech designs. I've always been a little wary though, and I can't say why.

Yays! I'll have to put that on my to-do list while I'm there.

Well, I got to play this at CanGames, and it was pretty good. I'm not quite sold on the damage resolution system, it seems a little over complicated, but it's pretty solid. I was impressed enough to pick up a rulebook and I'll probably grab a smallish force to try it out. I also picked up a cool fig I just had to have (Peace River Cataphract, a sweet little resin kit for only $30).

I was going to say that I never thought it was that complicated, but when I started to type it out as straight forward as I could, I realized that it did seem rather complicated. Even more so than Battletech, which is saying something.
For those of you who don't know, here's the highlights: -attacker rolls some dice, chooses the highest result and adds/subtracts modifiers. -defender does the same. -if the attacker's total beats the defender's, multiply the difference by the damage multiplier of the weapon, that's the damage done. -compare that value to the target's armour. If it is greater than the target's armour, light damage is done(one point). If it's more than double the target's armour, it's heavy damage(two points). If it's more than triple the target's armour, that's an over-kill and the target is very dead. -Models generally have 3 damage boxes, if it takes any damage after filling all three, it's dead. Some models have extra boxes, some have fewer. |
