Bloody to the end:
http://ninveah.blogspot.com/2007/08/bloody-battle-to-end.html Thoughts on new codex: nothing jumped out at me yet, but as Chris was using only the new daemon prince and no cult troops, I don't have a feel for it yet.

The fact that every chaos marine has a bolter, bolt pistol and close combat weapon is very useful at times. Chaos space marines are now truly jacks of all trades.
Raptors are nice and cheap now. They can even be used as bait--which is what I used them for--to draw his scopions out of cover. Too bad it was in vain. Terminators are cheaper with no upgrades, but much more expensive to upgrade now. Having 10 terminators in one squad was not very useful, especially since they could not deepstrike in that mission. I need to experiment more with that large squad before deciding whether or not to break it in two. Overall, for chaos undivided, the army performs pretty much as before. I lost my furies but compensated with raptors and more rhinos. I also need to play around with the new daemons. Fearless deepstriking troops have got to be useful for something. Eldar still scare the crap out of me. They hit like a ton of bricks and are so fast.

Did you go marked or un-marked? I haven't looked at the new codex yet and the DG are on the fence till I do. The new mark system seems, well, useless.
Why play straight Death Guard? |

The new marks are very good--they come in icons instead of marks though.
I play undivided. Death guard (plague marines) are very very powerful. However, in the new codex, you can mix and match to your hearts content. So why go all one god? The answer is very simple: In 40K, an army tends to be more powerful if it goes to extremes. Having an entire army wtih T5, feels no pain is very powerful. It basically means that all an opponents small arms fire is greatly reduced in effectiveness. If, however, you then mix some khorne/slannesh/tzentech/undivided into the mix, you have more bases covered but now he can shoot his small arms at the vulnerable models and save his heavy weapons/power weapons for your death guard.

I'm neutral on the icons. It's certainly going to change how I play. The fact that the costs are flat means that paying 10 points for an icon for 20 marines is a way better deal than paying 10 points for an icon for 5 marines.

When you consider the Nurgle icon is 50 points, I cannot see giving it to small sized squad at all. I doubt we will see too many nurgle bikers or nurgle terminators because of that. (Though T6 bikers would be cool). I think this is again a way of reducing min-maxing with the codex.

Actually, Chris, i believe in the wargear description of terminator armour, i think you're allowed to deepstrike even if the mission disallows it normally.

That only applies to loyalist marines.

Yao and CRC are correct, it's on page 86 of the new codex.

I have every only played straight DG.
But; I am seriously thinking of one raptor squad. But it's not fluffy. Would I get "dinged" for sportsmanship points if I played with one squad? I would play with the "old rules" with only two units in rhinos, etc. just for fluff. Then again; I might make a defiler proxie somehow and try a new skool DG army juist to see the survivability. BTW; can plague marines get a plague sword as an upgrade? |
