Autarch Eldrad Ulthran 10 Scorpions w/Wave Serpent transport 8 Harlequins w/Shadowseer 9 Swooping Hawks 2 squads of 15 Guardian Defenders, concealed 7 Rangers 1 Falcon 1 War Walker Fateros Sorcerer Lord Demon Prince 3 squads of 9 Thousand Sons 12 Demons Land Raider Defiler Predator Deployment Fateros' army split his 3 1k sons squads into 3 flanks, far left, far right, and dead center. There was a lot of forest inbetween our armies and a couple buildings here and there that he used to hide his Defiler behind, filling a gap between his right and center flanks of marines. He paired it with his Land Raider and put his Predator behind his left squad, as well as his demon prince. Lord Fateros himself kept his center squad company. I kept one of my guardians to my right and another in the center with my harlequins inbetween the 2 squads. Rangers were placed behind the harlequins. My Falcon behind my right flank of guardians and my autarch there as well. My left field kept my Scorpions with their transport, a War Walker and Eldrad to the left of my center squad of guardians. Eldar rolled 1st turn. Turn 1 Eldrad started things off and used his supportive powers to help the guardians to his right as well as to guide the walker on his left. However, the warp was heavy with evil creatures this day and wounded the ancient Farseer. The falcon broke forward, sacrificing firepower for a greater position to fire. The autarch flew behind the flying tank. The scorpions loaded up in the wave serpent and sailed forward. Guardians and harlequins surged forwards, firing some ineffective scatter laser and shuriken shrieker cannon rounds into the few enemy ranks that could be seen inbetween the groves of trees. The walker climbed into a good position of forested area, and managed to down one warrior. All other fire from the rangers and wave serpent proved ineffective to the thousand sons armoured shells. The thousand sons left and center flanks marched forward with murderous intent. The left fired shots at guardians of the Eldar right flank landing what seemed many killing hits but surprisingly left no casulties. The right flank entered the land raider and started driving down a lane. The demon prince took flight and headed to the center forest. The defiler took aim at the falcon along with the left lascannon sponson from the land raider and blasted the falcon from the sky! (The first time I've ever lost my falcon btw) Game on! Turn 2 The swooping hawks arrived on schedule, sending down a hail of grenades and killing two of Fateros' left squad. But no sooner had they landed then they were up in the sky again, waiting for the moment to strike the enemy head to head. The center flank of guardians reached the middle of the area now, dead center inside the thickest of the forest. The harlequins rounded the right side of the forest and hid behind the wreckage of the downed falcon. The rangers slung their longrifles around and had to leave their entrenched woods for another firing position closer to the enemy, having lost their firing lane with the falcons demise. The waveserpent, war walker, and other Eldar fire wittled down the center flank of thousand sons to four. The right flank of guardians moved ever closer to meet the left flank of thousand sons and managed to kill a few as they closed in. The Tzeentchian prince, getting impatient, forced his demonic minions forth and willed the Horrors and Flamers of Tzeentch forward toward the guardians in the center thicket. He attempted to slow down time and ready himself for this slaughter but the air was taint with Eldar wards and was hurt trying to bring time to a slow. Undaunted, he took to his wings and landed right in front of the Eldar. He attempted to destroy them in a wave of chaotic wind but the protective ward set up from runes used by Eldrad voided the attack and the beast lost half his strength to the renegade warp creatures that were frying his mind. Frustrated, he charged into the pitiful guardians with his summoned demons and slew four in an instant. The demons mauling just as many. The guardians, unable to land killing blows, barely held their ground as their Warlock leader reached into their minds and reminded them that help was comming. The land raider continued one step further and emptied its payload of warriors who fired upon the lurking war walker, but to no avail. The left flank formed a firing line and laid down a volley of fire along with the predator's autocannon and heavy bolter shots at the guardians comming around the bend of a thicket of bushes felling five. The defiler, finding no target, lurched forward with uncanny speed as it sought to end more Eldar lives. Turn 3 - Last turn Eldrad, using his powers to continually enchance his warriors as well as prophecise his enemies undoing, threw up a storm of cackling energy upon the defiler on the opposite side of the center forest. The defiler hovered in the air as the psychic energy was unleashed on him. The storm itself couldn't manage to dent the armor of the evil vehicle but sent it spinning and dropped it to the ground with its rear engine exposed to the Eldar force. The swooping hawks landed, throwing more grenades down upon the sorcerer lord and the reminents of the center thousand sons squad killing another warrior. The exarch gave lead to his squad and prepared a haywire grenade and pointed to the land raider. They landed behind a barn on which the other side was the formidable tank and its fresh troops. The wave serpent released its scorpions upon the land raiders thousand sons also firing a volley of laser into the defilers exposed rear, killing the engines. The war walker, seeing an opportunity, took fire at the defilers underarmored rear, destroying the vessel for good. The scorpions charged into the marines firing pistols and sawing with chainswords, destroying six armoured hulks while taking a single casualty. The harlequins, jumping past the wreckage of the falcon made position behind the demons that were killing the guardians and smashed into the rear rending demons to pieces. Two harlequins, too fast for the demonic prince, managed to stab their weapons into its flesh and unravel the monofilament wire inside it, vanquishing it. The guardians fought on and managed to close around the remaining minions of Tzeentch with the harlequins killing them from the other side. However, the demons fought like the trapped beasts they were and managed to destroy three harlequins in return. The guardians of the right flank ran forward firing a shredding force of shuriken into the thousand sons marines killing several and charged into them, daggers swinging and destroying what was left of the abomidable warriors. The autarch, witnessing the fight, set his eyes on the predator tank now lurking over the victorious guardians and started preping one of his haywires... The remaining right flank of marines tried to fight off the scorpions but were destroyed. The land raider, in an attempt to assassinate the leader of the Eldar force that had just annihalated them, fired a lascannon upon Eldrad Ulthran. But his psychic energy coursing through his rune armor saved him from the mighty cannon. Fateros counted his losses and realised he needed to leave and regroup more forces to deal the killing blow he sought to deliver today. ![]() This was my brother's first fight with the new Codex. He's now intent on burning his copy of it. He took this one hard, losing all his troops by the third turn, I think anyone could understand. That whole 1 wound thing. Also, having to roll for psychic tests really screwed him against an Eldar player with Runes of Warding. Gav Thorpe and Allesio Cavatore took away his wound, I took away his psychics, what was he left with? AP3 bolters to shoot 5+ cover saving guardians. I wonder if there's any saving his Tzeentch army. ![]()

In my ever so humble opinion, I knew the outcome as soon as I read this:
"Fateros' army split his 3 1k sons squads into 3 flanks, far left, far right, and dead center." Any decent Eldar general with troops in wave serpent and a falcon, along with Swooping Hawks, could exploit that division of the enemy and roll them up one by one. In addition, Eldar are very good at controlling the psychic phase now with Runes of Warding, and Eldrad is especially nasty. Another point is that the chaos army is heavy into large objects (Lord, Daemon Price, three heavy vehicles) all of which are vulnerable to single salvo neutralization. In my opinion, trading one of the HQs and one of the heavy support for more infantry. Rhinos for the current troops would have helped a lot as that rapid firing bolters could have been more useful against the static guardians. Its true that the AP3 of the 1K Sons is wasted on a lot of the Eldar basic infantry, but considering that most opponents he will face will have thicker 4+ and 3+ armour I should hope that he would be heartened somewhat.

Thanks Bill
We played one more game today in which he used only Doom Bolt for only one squad leader/sorcerer. He suffered perils on the second use and died. However, the game resulted in a tie, but around the third or fourth turn, I thought it was all him. It's just a shame is all...Tzeentch is all about psychics and here I am able to basically rob him of it. Runes of Warding is very overpowered, ESPECIALLY against Tzeentch.

That suggests to me that Tzeentch armies relying on Psychic powers are a one trick pony and Warding runes take the pony away. I'm not trying to be an ass here, but Eldar in the fluff are THE psychic masters in the universe. You're supposed to have trouble dueling the farseer in Psychic powers, that's the point. A good general has to adjust his tactics to deal with the situation. For example, a farseer is a toughness 3 character with 3 wounds and 4+ armour, and in close combat 1 base attack (2 for the pistol). He is easy to kill. He dead, runes of warding go pop! Phsyich problems over. I agree Runes of Warding are nasty, but only against armies relying too heavily on psychic powers.

Runes of Warding force enemy pskyers anywhere on the table to take all their psychic tests on 3 dice, added together, and anything over a 12 is a Perils of the Warp hit.

Is there a Thousands Sons item or maybe character that doesn't suffer Perils of the Warp (or it that Typhus???)
My guess is that dude with the rune of warding would become a spawn PDQ. LOL

In the previous codex, thousand son sorceres did not need to take psychic tests. Hence, they did not suffer from runes of warding. They lost that ability this time around (get +1 on their invulnerable save instead).

In the previous codex, Runes of Warding also worked differently.
