Ok, I started the base coat on my Castellan carrier battleship and read the new fleet rules for the forge world models. All in all they look pretty cool. I don't figure they are overbalanced but have a little of everything. There is no such thing as a broadside battery on the tau ships so it's not as if you can generate a ton of firepower. Instead you get sizeable ordnance out of almost every capital ship which seems to give the fleet a far more modern combat feel (carriers, etc etc). The coolest thing is you can use the old Tau fleetlist with it as well as Demiurg and mercenaries so there is a whole host of fun stuff to play with.
I think out of the old fleet list the only thing I'd be using would be the Messenger escort as it seems that it's almost a prerequisite for the fleet to be effective.

Though, the frontal firepower of a Tau fleet is very powerful--with their turret rule. This list is a bit weaker as you do not have those tracking ships which allow you to ignore range penalties on your guns.
I think the demiurg are great for the Tau list--they give them resilience and broadside capabilities. I found it weird that this new list does not have the Kroot warsphere in it. I am just not sure how the Tau would stack up against eldar. Their ordnance won't work too well against the eldar, and the speed and firepower of eldar would be dvastating. I think they might be imbalanced with Imperial and Chaos depending on the scenario but orks should balance well. They might also have trouble with space marines. The armour 6 and lots of their own ordnance will negate the tau's carrier tactics to a large extent, and space marines will do maybe a little too well in boarding actions against the TAU. When you get a fleet together please let me know. I am dying to try out my marines. (Dominion fleet--ultramarines).

The great things is, the Messengers can be used due to the new FW list allowing the old models to be used as well, so long as you have less points spent in the old models than the new.
Yeah, after some searching on the forums folks tend to feel the list is pretty kaiboshed but no matter, I like the models, something will get worked out.

It says nothing about using the old models with the new list anywhere that I can find. Unless you can use the standard reserve rules (1 ship of class X from reserves for every 3 ships from the main list)--and no mention is made of that anywhere.

Yeah, trick is I used to have a 2,000pt Tau Fleet... hated it. Well, liked the rules alright, but the models... Yech!
Here is what I'd think, interlink the messengers with Defenders (Tough, I like em better than Swords) and close to the carrier... she's a tough mother and cheap too. Maybe 2 of those. Than buy Cruisers for the rest. 3 frigate fleets, one or two BS, the rest either Heros or Emissaries.

Yeah, I'm slow as a brick though, so with a little careful planning I think you may be able to stay out of range.
