'Nids and 5th ed?

So, reading on the web, a great groan is rising from 'nid players with the upcoming 5th edition. For those more in the know (I've been playing Fantasy :SHAME: ), are us 'nid players going to be traveling up the creek without our symbiotic paddle? Surrounded by nie invincible Kroot, and lions and tigers........ :nuke:

Just curious.

Re: 'Nids and 5th ed?

Well, lets review: Preferred Enemy is now "reroll to hit" rather than a blanket "hit on a 3+" so now Genestealers with the Feeder Tentacles is actually useful!

For me, Lictors now a bit more useful, as they are still one of very few 40k units who can deepstrike then charge, but with vehicles in cover getting cover saves, and Lictors striking the rear armor in CC regardless of facing... well yeah... that mitigates a bit of the AT firepower we lost in 5th: VCs only glancing, which means no chance of destroying vehicles unless it has already been damaged, and rending is now on the to-wound roll, and only +d3 on vehicles.

Look at what adding scuttling does to a unit of genestealers: the ability to flank!!!! Holy Crap man, genestealers (fleet)coming on one of the 2 side edges while the rest of your army is charging up the middle. The Broodlord Genestealers can now "run" to get a bit closer the turn prior to their charge. Actually, I believe any unit can "run" after deepstriking, so even Raveners if they get a bad scatter, can "run" into cover.

Screening: Don't even get me started on Spinegaunts now. A cheap 100 point unit that is 20 wounds, and that provides cover saves to the broods behind them. Whats not to love.. like grots only way better.

Oh, and "run" makes CC Carnifexes useful again. So maybe I'll stop seeing the same 2 fu@king types of carnifexes in EVERY SINGLE LIST now, and see some other biomorphs. I know I'm glad I've only built one of my 6 carnifexes so far, and yes, I admit, it was a VC/BS carnifex....shame....shame..

The thing with Nids now will be that since we can't consolidate into a new unit after a victorious CC, the unit will either have to be large, to soak up the return fire, or Supported by other units charging potential return fire squads at the same time. Again, this role can be filled by the once-maligned lictor: charge into the side of that Devastator unit, tie it up.

One last thought: Zoanthorpe (blast), Barbed Strangler and Deathspitter shots now no longer roll "to hit" and there are no more partials, everyone is hit <evil grin>

Heh. Good summary, Dennis. I told Kermit he was being a little..... "reactionary".

well, im playing a game of 5th ed tomorrow, so we'll see how she goes. A lot of rules flipping more than likely. And we're using the playtest rules, since the local store doesnt have the book yet...................

True the blast shot will no longer need a to hit roll, but the low accuracy of nids unit, it will scatter a lot! Not that this is a bad thing tough. Barbed strangler in the midst of a huge squad will be very dangerous.

Re: 'Nids and 5th ed?

well, "it will scatter a lot"... there are the "Hit" symbols on the dice, and even though I never get any.. apparently there are 2 ofthese symbols per artillery dice lol.

But my favorite part is that they can never 'miss'. Before, if I shot a barbed strangler into a huge mess of orks and missed, i hit NO ONE, and now, itll scatter and hit SOMETHING. But, and correct me if Im wrong, my unit of 6 warriors with deathspitters.. I place one small blast template, roll for scatter, then do 5 more "barrage" style shots off the main blast template right?

Barrage will now simply be a multiple blast, so you will roll to hit and scatter for each of them.

This is something that leaves me saying "WTF the current way is so much easier and better to manage" but until i see the release hardcopy i will take everything here with a grain of salt.

Re: 'Nids and 5th ed?

this scattering is esentilly the way it used to be... keep in mind these blasts can go into fellow orks this is so much more complete when you think about some of these huge weapons being fired off and they end up in the warp somewhere above the enemies head... I prefer scatter for sure

Guilty as well (at least in terms of considering one in my list). But your post gives me hope! I plan on making a CC-oriented fex and providing him with 6 feeder tendril-equipped 'stealer escorts. WS2 always seemed to me like more of a negative than the inability to move quickly. But now that run will allow the Carnifex to keep up with my betentacled gribblies, I forsee a possibly productive symbiosis.

By the way, out of curiosity, how do you intend to configure your CC-Fexes? I'm curious about your biomorph and weapon selections.

Inundate me with your wisdom!

@Zulimbashi : When i saw what Matt said iwas litheraly going to refit my CC carnifex for ranged combat but now i am waiting for the new released and you can bet that if its true my CC carny will stay as is.

In case your wondering my CC carny as :

scyhing talongs , crushing claws , extended carapace , toxic miasma , adrenal gland(I&WS).

So, how will this new blast weapon ruling affect MC's with TL deathspitters?

I'm curious as to how a TL blast weapon will work as well. Yay Havoc Launchers, boo that they're not defensive any more.

My guess is that it will re-roll the scatter die.

Havocs are S4, why wouldn't they be defensive?

[edit] also, it's possible they saw the light and made TL give re-rolls to wound/pen instead of to hit. (which never made any sense to me, the whole point of TL weapons it to only have to aim once for two bullets)
