may make you sad but when a certain army makes up so large a percentage of GWs sales it is likely to get a bit more attention lavished on it. I don't think the marines are now ultimately customizable, in fact they are less so than before. The changes GW has made finally changes marines up a bit as they had been relativley unchanged since their 3rd edition codex (circa 1998). The new things are neat but seem a little gimmicky now, but time will tell. I can't wait one way or another.

You gotta admit: It looks like a bit of codex creep happening over the course of, say, the last 3 new codices.

That would be a shame - I had just taught my Scouts how to shoot with their sniper rifles rather than bludgeon skulls with them, and my Tactical squad dude with a Lascannon that he can wreak much more havoc using the damn thing as a gun rather than as a fancy mace (and it lasts longer too)! The Black Rage was a major annoyance (as was the random and unpredictable [though fluffy] Death Company rolls) when I first played Blood Angels in 3rd Ed, though I didn't much mind getting the free Furious Charge for every unit in my army. I just want a Redeemer. Because it's a Baal Predator, only bigger. And I wouldn't mind having my Chapter Master be able to beat Marneus Calgar in a friendly fist-fight. And I'd love to get my Assault Squad flamers back. It's just a wishlist.

@ Steel paladin: I wonder what that twin mega bolter turret would look like on a redeemer to make the Super Baal?

That would look absolutely hot (pardon the pun). Do I smell VDR? Or perhaps a Forge World ruleset or homebrew Apocalypse datafax?

no, just use it as a redeemer if your opponent doesnt want to let you use it as a King Baal. Do Blood angel LRs get overcharged engines?

Interesting thing I noticed reading the rulebook: the battle report between ultramarines and eldar seems to give a hint to the new Marine points costs. Most of the things in the ultramarine list don't conform to the current codex point costs....

I'd wait and see how the book after this turns out before we say anything. I personally hope they are just finally listening to the community and cutting back on the stream lining. From what I can see the codex creep will suck but that always happens, but the customization could very well just be them finally listening to what we want. I doubt its a fluke that its starting with space marines, but Im hoping we will start seeing an improvement. Orks was awesome, I liked the deamons codex (I should as Im using it ^^), and this is awesome. The only shame is that when the new chaos legions book comes out eventually it will be like the old eldar codex, nobody uses it and instead uses the craftworld book. I thought it was a good read, better then reading about the heresy ... again |

New rumour from LA is that Phil Kelly said the older marine books won't be updated/faqd to bring them in line with the new dex, gearwise or unitwise.
If interested, one can read a few hundred DA/BA/BT/SW players complaining about how their armies should get access to everything the new codex will have + all their codex specific special rules here http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159768 Is (of course) still just a rumour btw, no one seems to have concretely heard whether he was referring to just the new units (Sternguard etc) or all the gear. |

I would agree with the other armies not getting the new stuff. They have their own stuff, vanilla players should get their own toys.

Sorry, I'm a bit Forrest Gumpy when it comes to stuff like this. Can you explain what this means? (Phil Kelly eats poop)

Apparently Phill Kelly said that there would be *NO* as in ZERO updates done on FAQs for the BT/DA/BA/SW to bring their gear and/or units up to par with the stuff in the new codex.
So a Stormshield from the new Marine codex will have different rules than a Stormshield from any other codex. Thing is, afaik, there has been no official GW word on this. Just what Kelly said at LA. And given that he's been wrong before in what he says publicly I don't know why so many people are crying. Other than the fact that many of them want all the toys from the new codex as well as everything unique that they get in there own dexs. |

I most certainly hope that Mr. Kelly turns out to have been mistaken.

Im fine with points costs and so on being different to represent the comparitive availability of some things for some chapters. Excpet its not. I still dont fathom how its fair to have a kid show up with his deathwing terminators with thunderhammer and stormshields, to find out that the ultramarine storm shields are 3+ save instead of your 4 + ones, and that the ultra cyclone launcher magically has an extra shot it can fire.
One of the rationales behind NOT faqing things is to keep things simple for newer players.. well how is having different values for the exact same thing not confusing? ANd also, someone stated somewhere that is it REALLY a big imposition on someone to carry an extra printed of FAQ along with their rulebook, figure case, models, dice and tape? I mean, its an extra piece of paper. People made out just fine when there was chapter approved article army lists in WD. And its not like I play one of the affected chapters either, Im getting all these advantages, and I wish now I had flipped Heads when i decided whether to paint my marines crimson fists, or gloss black for dark angels.

Yeah.. but things are already that way..
Some terminators are fearless, some aren't. Some Predators can have asscans. Some Predators and Rhinos have "extra special" engines. Some armies Assault Cannons are rending, some aren't. etc etc. It'd be nice if GW would faq everything and keep it consistent, but it's hardly like this is new, nor has any of the past stuff really resulted in this big an outrage. Are the BA still a vilable and competitive army without the new stuff? Yes Are the DA? I'd argue they're less competitive than most of the marine chapters, but still ahead of a number of armies. Also I'm pretty sure no one will mind if you decide to use DA rules for your CF painted chapter. |
