ok, in the computer and console forum, I have my conundrum, and my install of XP didnt go so great: looks like its a bad install of XP: the cds provided by MDG two and a half years ago have never been touched (I had them pre install it) and it turns out the upgrade/service pack cd was missing. I had hit cancel, figuiring I could just download the service packs later, and it all seemed fine.
Now, It wont recognize my internet connection, wont load IE (the icon is there but not the program, I tried to 'run' i explore, nothing) tried new internet connection wizrd, nothing I know my connection to the 'net works though, since the wifes laptop works perfectly when I plug her in to the modem. So, barring this last miracle, look slike Ill have to get a new OS, and the local store only has Vista. Does it still suck a lot? does it run games? I only run warhammer online, warcraft, pokerstars and ..... Battlefield games really. Will I be ok with Vista? or should I order XP and wait god knows how long for that shit to get delivered to me up here in the -25 degree North? (sorry, I wanted to run this here to get maximum coverage from the community-at-large.. even though it should go into Computer and Console forum..) Pre-emptive strike on Orbital: No I wont get a MAC

I run vista and play Cod 4, WoW works fine, as well as dawn of war. You can change the games to run in XP sv pack 2, if you really have issues running it. kinda like people had to do with xp when it first came out hehe.
The only thing I found is for games that download stuff to your computer is the permissions. so setting it up so the user control runs in admin when you access the game. there is a way to prevent this but I am lazy enough to click yes before a game starts and not figure out how to turn it off. I've been running vista for over a year and I haven't really had any big issues other then the growing pains of a new os, and thoes seem to be in the past now.

Since there is no OT forum yet i'll indulge you Den
![]() Den I recently switched to Vista on my newest gaming rig and I love it. So bright and shiny and very...'rounded' Seriously everything feels warm and soft, nice curves everywhere. It also runs everything (WAR, EvE, WoW, RA3) fine for me so far. I'm no compuexpert by any means but I am happy with it. |

The only thing I know is that Vista consistently gets 20% fewer framerates on most major games than XP does. The rest, I have no idea at all.

If you're computer has the power to run Games and Vista, then go for it! If your computer is carrying less than 2Gb of Ram, and you want to play fairly recent games... well Vista may get in the way, since it tends to be quite a resource hog.
I think that a big part of Vista's bad rep is that when it first came out, it was being run on a lot of less powerful rigs (512Mb-1Gb of Ram...), where the resources were eaten by Vista, slowing the whole thing down. My laptop, which I had bought brand new with Vista, wasn't usable until I went from .5 to 2Gb of ram. Once I did that though... I love Vista, and mine's not even a gaming rig! |

I have 4 gigs of RAM in mine, mind you its not the fastest RAm available but it runs it all very smoothly.
If i dumb down settings a bit I can three-box WoW failry easily. |

I am seriously planning on never using Vista.
Ever. Frankly, it has no advantages over XP, and a lot of disadvantages. The big one (for me) being that it is designed from the ground up to take control away from the user. I want my computer to follow my directives; and nuts to any corporation that wishes otherwise. If I wanted a box that only did what other people told it, I'd get a console. All that said, I'm surprised that you're having trouble installing it. On the other hand, if it's XP service pack zero, I can understand why it might be that bad. I've been told that it's not safe to install XP-0 on a computer connected to the net, because you'll be compromised before you can finish downloading security updates. Certainly you can use your wife's machine to download the offline installs of the later service packs and burn them to a CD, if that's all the trouble you're having. You also might want to canvass the locals, borrowing a XP CD isn't normally that hard, but then again, I haven't never been anywhere near that far north.

My present machine had Vista preloaded. There were a number of things I had to get used to,
like the way you navigate folders (very MacOS-like). I haven't experienced really any problems with running games. I've got DoW, WAR, Steam (and various famous Valve games) on this machine, and they run pretty well. The trick is making sure you have the Service Pack, and making sure your computer can handle it. It sounds like you'll be OK, Den. Just my two cents.

I have yet to indulge myself with the actual Vista experience. I've tweaked my XP sp3 install to look and behave exactly like Vista, sidebar and all, without the "memory hogging" side effects. With Windows 7 slated for release in 2010, I highly doubt I will ever touch Vista.

I bought a laptop with Vista Business....I endured it for a while but the laptop was slow-ish.
I loaded XP onto it and it runs like there's no tomorrow. Essentially, if you have no need for Vista, don't use it and put XP on it. It will do everything Vista does but faster. As for the CD, PM me and I'll send one up your way. Since you OWN a license, this is legal since the media doesn't matter, only the CD key and license. It has SP2 pre-loaded. If you really want, I can slipstream it and put SP3 on it too. Just be sure that you have access to the right drivers for your network access, otherwise, you won't be able to get the other drivers off the net...

Vista was built from the ground up with newer componets in mind and most of the lol vista sucks comes from 2 people:
1) the people who tried to instal win95 on a 486 2) the people running with the cheapest POS offband parts they can find with cheap POS driver... or creative drivers lol If your running a fast system with good parts (you might want to check that as I assume MDG runs like every other prefab computer outlet cutting corners in places you wouldnt check) you'll be fine with vista. In fact what corey said only actually reflects low to mid range systems, asvistas "foot print" shrinks as your system improves in performance (ie quad core, 8+ gigs of ram etc) mind you I highly doubt your running a system like that as when you get into that range your ether a server or increasing you e-pene. Gah sorry for the rant. |

That's a serious over generalization.
Really, for most of the people I talk to it comes down to two things: 1. It's slower and more bloated. 2. It has no advantages over XP.
