Some of you have probably heard my experiences watching televangelists as a child (I honestly thought they were comedy shows, out of numerous ones I watched, my favorite was Robert Tilton, as for his bizarre mannerisms and (now) the magic of the internet has put fart noises to make it all complete.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd_YlQ5ZSHI here's a little part of his show-don't think its on anymore here's one in poor taste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAAIY1MkKSI&feature=related enjoy :P ![]()

Robert Tilton-he was a televangelist big in the late 80's early 90s
I used to get up every morning at 6 am to watch him (and he didn't fart then, imagine how I felt when I found the video's that he did :lol ![]() here's another favorite of mine-Kerney Thomas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kulq7biswMw&feature=related and here's one of Phil Collins talking about a Genesis song he did a few years back, on a British talk show (the song was about televangelists) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gySQdpSvZcQ&feature=related its particularly funny at the end

Here's my favourite, Benny Hinn - just because he's such an obvious fake:

There was a show a while back that showed exactly how Benny Hinn could "know" about people's ailments: Everyone that comes in gets a seating ticket, and are asked to fill out a questionnaire for some prize or some such. So, people waiting in line do jus that. His wife, who is in some command centre, looks for good ones, and through an earpiece in Benny's ear, tells him to say "Is there someone here with X disease?" while he is heading to the right person. He knows what ails them and so on, and innocent people are duped into thnking Jeebus is speaking through him to magically know what they just worte on a card half hour prior.
The wife os one of my coworkers gets stuff from Benny Hinn once a week, and in EACH ONE, is some way for you to help his crusade by sending shitloads of cash. I hope there is a God, for obvious reasons, but I also hope there is a special punishment for people like Benny Hinn who prey on the elderly for money through religion

Interesting quote from the Baha'i Writings: "Beware that thou allow not the wolf to become the shepherd of God's flock, and surrender not the fate of His loved ones to the mercy of the malicious. Expect not that they who violate the ordnances of God will be trustworthy or sincere in the faith they profess. Avoid them, and preserve strict guard over thyself, lest their devices and mischief hurt thee."

Peter Popoff did pretty much the exact same thing (what is Baha'i, Corey?)

I read a bit more, because I was intrigued by the sense this made to me. I found that those writings and the ideas presented therein are rather consistent with the way I view things. Very fascinating. I come from a Christian background, studied Islam and Sufism in university, and I find this interesting faith which seems to ack- nowledge all prior forms of deistic faith, and makes it rather clear that it's all about reason, justice, honesty, and understanding.

That's kind of what got me into it as well. When I started reading about the Baha'i Faith (this is a long time ago now), I thought "I already believe that stuff" and "if there's a God then I think He'd tell us things like this". So I liked that. You can get a lot of info about it at http://bahai.org or you can just ask me about it any time you're so inclined.

Thumbnail sketch: Baha'is believe there's one God and that no matter what you call Him (Yaweh, Allah, Baha, etc) that there's just the one. They also believe that all the Messengers of God are, in essence, teaching the same religion... only at different times in history to different people. Rather like waves of the same sea in a sense. They also believe that all the people of the word are a single family, regardless of race, gender, nationality, class, etc. It was founded in the mid-1800's by Baha'u'llah and is, to date, the second most widespread religion in the world (next to Christianity) with roughly 6 million followers. I became a Baha'i in 1983 and have been rockin' it ever since.

Anyhow, Baha'u'llah had a lot of very strong things to say about people who trick others in the name of religion. I believe the word "Accursed of God" is used, but I'd have to check.
Baha'is have no clergy, and I think that the rampant corruption is part of what made that a good idea.
