"The Secret in healing Narcissism is not to heal it at all, but to listen to it. Narcissism is a signal that the soul is not being loved sufficiently. The greater the Narcissism, the less love being given." ~ Thomas Moore, 'Care of the Soul'.

Q. Is it really possible to heal NPD?

A. Anything is possible. You do not have to be a negative statistic on a probablity curve of people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder

I'm proud to report that I've just pulled my second all nighter within this week. I doubt that's gonna be very positive for me in general.

But the good thing is that I'm giving my sister a tennis lesson this evening, assuming I'm still awake and can stand on my two feet then.

Take care,

Matt

Gee, positive posts have really slowed down recently - must be the season!!

I haven't been around as much as usual because my phone was out, then my ISP was down and then I had to fight the kids to get on the net!!

Good to hear everybody's news. I have a few positives to post. My eldest continues to go for treatment. We have had a few rages but, apart from those, I continue to see growth. He now says 'please' and 'thanks' without being prompted and we have 'normal' conversations. Haven't tackled any issues yet but we chat about cars or music, or the news or what is happening with his friends. He even tells me things that are happening at school! It's great to be able to have a relationship with him, even if the stuff we discuss is fairly superficial.

And the daily hug - and kiss - continue, often accompanied with 'love ya'.

And another -

My son's psychologist wants to step up his treatment to 2 a week. I cannot afford this so he has agreed to take IOUs from me. This will allow my son to complete the treatment in a shorter time frame. I'm hoping to see further gains and am excited that they will occur quicker!!

And pleased that the psychologist is willing to do this to help my son.

I agree the positives are slow. I hope that's not a sign everyone is bummed. I'ven ot been around much because my computer blew up and I had to get money for a new one. The good news is I didn't get mad. I just realized I needed to work hard to get themoney. No one is to blame for the problem and now things are looking up.

Its a rainy mucky day in the great northwest and the forcast calls for it to be this way all weekend. So I'm going to make the best of it and do some writing and reading and prepare myself for news regarding my application for the new job with the alternative youth detention camp. I will try and stay relaxed because at this point there is nothing more I can do other than await their decision.

Yesterday, on the way to school, I asked my eldest whether he had any assignments due. He answered that he had one due that day but that he had done it and handed it in the day before. He had got it in early because he had a busy day and he was worried that he would forget to hand it in.

Talk about ORGANISED!! I'm so proud of him, I could burst.

I'm feeling better about myself than I have in a long, long time. "The Inner World of Trauma" book is really helping, even though I know that it doesn't directly help me feelings and what's inside me. Basically it's made me understand that my all of my inner defenses and my cruel conscience and the problems that I'm having right now are a result of very deep wounds and that I should stop beating myself up all the time for everything. Somehow that just didn't get through to me before. Of course, I still have to remember that even though I didn't create all of the trouble in my life, I'm going to be on my own and responsible for myself pretty soon. That's the next chapter.

Take care,

Matt

Went to a conference to hear Ana-Maria Rizzuto, a neurologist, psychoanalyist, and one of the first to do research in the area of psychology and religion. Her main work has been around the development of what she calls "God representations." She spent 15 years researching the views of God of an inpatient psychiatric population, and was able to prove that our beliefs about God are all based on our relationships with our primary objects (father/mother/nurturing figures) at key developmental junctures. I'm not trained in psychoanalysis or object relations, so I don't pretend to have understood every nuance, but overall, it was excellent, invigorating, and left me with a lot of cool ideas about what directions to go in my own therapy. She is quite frankly brilliant, and it was incredible to hear about her work. She also had some interesting things to say about the function of fantasy in intrapsychic life which I found very comforting-- Apparently having fantasies is normal, and facing my fantasies is the sort of unearthing one does when one begins to examine one's defenses and the workings of one's own mind, so even though I feel frail and quite vulnerable, maybe those feelings are indicators that I am healing. Sorry so long, esp. here, but these are postives for 2 days that were just amazing.

Hestia I would love to hear more about that conference you went to... maybe you could post something about it when you have the time.

I just watched Braveheart for the fourth time I think. Always a great movie.

Matt, maybe tonight after my son's in bed I'll dig out my notes and post more about it. That'll help it stick in my own brain, too. I admit I thought of you and the folks here as I listened.

Ok, folks, I think I've come to a bit of clarity. It's not a good thing that I feel BUMMED about the chance to work things out with my husband. Right or wrong, that's were I am, and I have to honor that. So I intend to go into marriage counseling and discuss this situation and see what he thinks our chances are. Tony's right-- my son needing therapy is to be expected-- even the pediatrician said it's just a matter of helping him express his anger-- poor little booger must feel so out of control of his little world. But I am not going to call my lawyer and put a hold on things yet. In fact, she said it was normal to have ambivalence after doing the paperwork and to feel free to take a few weeks to ride that out and make sure I'm comfortable with my decision.
This just accepting where I am makes me feel good about myself-- big positive!!!
