Q. Is it really possible to heal NPD?

A. Anything is possible. You do not have to be a negative statistic on a probablity curve of people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Rebirthing therapy ( 16:49:03 WedApr 27 2005 )

Has anyone every come across this thing known as rebirthing therapy? There is a woman in my community who says it might help me start over in life and maybe enchance my chances of having a conscience. I did a little research and it appears to be pretty controversial. I'm almost desperate enough to try anything given that I cannot get SSI to pay for real therapy.

I applaud your desire to get help but this is NOT the way to do it! NOT under ANY circumstances. Rebirthing therapy has been called voodo therapy and is responsible for the direct result of several children. I believe its banned in several states . Keep looking, but go elsewhere!

Rebirthing therapy has been largely used with adopted kids who had Attachment disorder in an effort to get them to bond with their foster parents. It is very controversial because it did lead to the death of several kids. This happened largely because it was being practiced by totally unqualified people in less than ideal therapy settings. Several years ago Congress passed a nonbinding resolution asking states to ban rebirthing therapy. I'm not sure what the status of that is in most states - I know it was banned in Colorado where one of the more infamous cases happened. The problem is the ban only really effects those people who are licensed by the state. There are a lot of people claiming to be therapists who have no license and can do pretty much as they please.

I've talked to some licensed professionals who believe there may be something to rebirthing therapy but it needs a lot more research and refinning. Thanks to the problems that have surfaced it is unlikely mainstream or even ethical holistic providers will give much thought to this for a long time.

In other words if this person is offering rebirthing therapy I'd be very leary. There are legitimate energy therapies which might do as much to help you build your conscience and are provided by much more ethical providers. If at all possible I'd go that route long before working with rebirthing, at least for now.

Hey, can anyone give me the lowdown on what rebirthing therapy is, in a brief paragraph, or provide links? I'm getting visuals in my mind that I probably shouldn't be having...it sounds frightening.

Here is a pretty accurate brief description of rebirthing therapy.

Quote:

Rebirthing is a therapy used to treat attachment disorder, where adopted children resist forming loving relationships with their new parents. The children are covered in blankets and pillows meant to simulate the womb and are encouraged to push their way out, or emerge "reborn'' to bond with their adoptive parents.

In the case where the girl died in Colorado several adults weighing several hundred pounds were sitting on top of this girl who was burried in blankets. She was smoothered to death.... This is why its a rather controversial practice.

I have used rebirthing in the past, although many years ago and found it to be OK...there was no covering with blamkets or people on top of me...the whole process was breath orientated and handled by well traIned persons....I have also tried and loved HolotropicBreathwork, pioneered by Stanislav Grof....very deep and cathartic.....if you wish to read more about re-birthing have alook at this link....http://www.rebirthingbreathwork.com/

The fact remains that rebirthing therapy as practiced in the US is indeed banned in many states. I know it is in Colorado, North Carolina and Washington, could get a list of other states as well. Proceed with great caution.
