Re: Idaho property tax

Our acting governor is planning a special session to do what the Senate coudn't do during the regular session. A bill that would have moved school tax (M&O) off property and on to sales tax went down 20-15. Now the Gov. wants to resurrect this turkey.

The problem is that all property taxpayers will be relieved yet nonresident homeowners and businesses pay little sales tax. So, the rest of us will get to pick up the bill. Whose idea could that have been? My guess is big business.

The Democrats have recently proposed an approach that would give Idaho resident homeowners the break, saving us about $100M. It would be paid out of the current surplus for the first year. Although not part of the plan, I think we should pay for subsequent years by rolling back the income tax cut passed in 2001. That will raise more than $100M per year and put our tax system more in line with ability to pay. Everyone knows that sales tax is our most regressive tax, especially when food is taxed. We have the worst of all worlds. We are one of only 16 states that apply sales tax to groceries.

It's time that the working and middle class taxpayer got a break.

bwynhasn --------------------- My brain must of been in neutral . You are of course correct . I guess having your money taxed several times before you get to spend it is enough for them in this case .
However if you are paying an insurance premium it is in a way a "hidden" tax -- at least it feels like one to me .
Thanks for pointing out my mistake , dam that makes 2 this year and the year is only half over . LOL

Re: Idaho property tax

Our acting (pretending?) gov dismisses the Democrats plan for reducing property taxes on the grounds that the plan is unconstitutional because it taxes people at different rates. Yet we are already doing that in support of the two biggest religions in Idaho. Big families, lots of kids in school, put the most pressure not only on schools but the general infrastructure. The more kids you have, the more exemptions you get, the less you pay into the general fund. That should be unconstitutional. Delete exemptions on the state income tax forms. Calculate the increased tax income and put it toward property tax relief, school funding, and an income tax rate reduction. Aside from opposition by organized religion, why shouldn't this idea be considered?

re: proposed state sales tax increase: not taxing perscription drugs is wonderful. the next step, stop the tax on food. unprepared and cold prepared food items should be exempt. why tax a basic need item? taxing a basic need item falls into the same catagory as the retired elderly person on a fixed income being taxed out of their home because of property value increases. common sense needs to prevail. yes, taxes are needed for the infrastructure to be maintained. but the infrastructure needs to be held accountable to the taxpayer, that the money was spent wisely and prudently. not spent just because of a use it or lose it budget model. once tax dependent agencies learn to live on budget just like taxpayers have to, then perhaps we can effect a change in the tax system.

Re: Idaho property tax

The government's elected street walkers will never do the right thing to support the people. The very first thing that needs to be done is to go with school vouchers and allow the children to get a decent education and not do whatever the teachers union demands.
The next thing woiuld be to stop the sales taxes on food. Then make it so all homes on normal lots no matter the value have a flat property tax. Then reduce the size of government and lots of it.
The best way to start making government smaller is to give people a choice of government school or private school. Once the SAT's come out and folks see what a sad bunch the folks who work for government schools are the government school that are sucking our money into a black hole will come to a stop.
Keep in mind the people by far and large who become teachers and go for a government job are the bottom of the barrel of college grads. If you can't make it in any kind of skilled degree and know you don't have the mind set to work hard you become a teacher. The SAT scores between people who turn to government school teaching jobs and people who move into skilled degrees is very, very large of a difference. Teachers are blood sucking losers that feed off the hard working families and this state needs to cut the head off the snake thast doing so much damage to our children.
This newspaper needs to tell the people the truth about what a nightmare the government schools are and the damage to the children that they cause.
This newspaper has turned it's back on the children in the name of politics and it's agenda.

Mr_IC2, That rock you just crawled out from under is a better place for your intellect. That was a very stupid post. Nothing was right and everything was wrong. You're truely ignorant.
