We have not yet turned in any tests....but my daughter has written in the books and has ripped out pages. How do they count this for the refund? She has two courses right now. Will we pay for those two courses or is it based on the tests taken? I read that its the number of tests you turn in....does this mean that we have to return the books if we cancel? While I like American school, my daughter is just not independent enough to do the work. I find myself arguing with her again and again. She does better with a daily schedule but if I make the daily schedule, she feels she can blow it off. She is VERY defiant and if mom says to do something, then she won't do it. We so far, have had the best luck with a curriculum like Oak Meadow or Teaching plans which both break down the work requirements into weekly or daily increments. I even tried to get her to break down AS, but she wouldn't follow her own plan. I am ready to give up but since we will need to order new curriculum, I am hoping to get as much of a refund as possible. Thanks. Laura |

(just a thought, if she is high school level, she should be made to do her work, time to grow up here-it should not make any difference if you make the plans or some school does. the other schools are really alot more money. I would make her do it, or she is in her room til she does, just a thought- I also have a stubborn daughter.) |

I may stick with American School until she is 16 and then if she still has not done the work, get her a full time job and make her pay expenses. At this point, I don't know what else to do. She has these plans to be a lawyer or a director...but she doesn't want to work to get what she wants. Those teen stars that are discovered at age 15 or so really don't help! LOL She seems to think someone will 'discover' her as well. Anyway, I am very frustrated at the moment...and part of my wants to give up, let her fail but then another part of me knows I can't do that. We have taken away everything we can from her, grounded her, tried rewards, etc....but nothing is as important to her as doing nothing! Literally, she can spend an entire morning staring at a wall! Thanks for letting me vent. And you are right, the other programs are just more expensive and more money to throw away if she doesn't do that either. |

AS is so much better for us than PS was. I hope that you and your daughter can find a plan that works for you. FWIW, I make ds an assignment sheet for the week and go over it with him on Sunday afternoon. He is responsible for getting the work done. If he doesn't do well, he does it over. I've given him more responsibility for planning his way through some courses himself. It IS an ongoing process, but I think AS is doable--even for the oppositional defiant child. Best wishes. Janice |
