typing exams for handicapped student

Hi, I am thinking of starting my daughter in the AS program. We have one problem however that I was hoping someone could advise me about. My dd has dysgraphia caused by mild cerebral palsy. Her handwriting is extremly difficult to read and the process of writing by hand is very difficult and a very aversive procedure for her. Will we have any problem being able to have her type her exams on the computor and just attaching the answers she has typed out to the exams? Thanks, Judy

No problem here

Judy,

Many of the exam questions are True/False, multiple choice, matching. You could easily help your daughter fill these out on the actual exam. Then when you come to the questions requiring longer answers, just type them out and attach to the exam. We actually cut and tape them right into the spot designated for the answer. We have had no problems with AS doing this. I think the teachers probably welcome easy to read answers.

Best of luck,
Nickie

Re: typing exams for handicapped student

Hi Judy,

My son has very poor handwriting and he types everything he possibly can for his AS work. He's finished with about 8 courses and hasn't had any problem with typing. He simply writes "see attached page" on the actual exam, and then he makes sure he writes the question number, what exam # he's doing, and his name, etc., on the top of the paper in case it gets separated from the exam. On longer questions on the exam, he's even typed the answer onto a piece of paper and then cut and pasted it to the exam. No problems or complaints whatsoever. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Nickie & Shelley. I am glad to hear that the AS is so accommodating. We are still weighing the pros and cons of doing high school with AS. At glad this is one issue that is no longer a problem. Judy
