Typing the exams?

Our 14yods has most of the symptoms of Dyslexia/Dysgraphia. We have never had him "formally" tested but by researching on our own, what we have found just blows us away. Now I understand why he does the things he does. Question being...do you think AS would allow him to type his answers? Writing is so difficult for him and he can't write without lines. It's something we have to work on on our own and it will take awhile. We found a program that we can scan in his exam and he can type on the exam. Do you think they will accept a copy? I know I'll probably have to call AS but was wondering if anyone has gone through this. Who would I contact at AS about this? Thankx
Linda

Re: Typing the exams?

They do accept typing on the exam, but you must send in the original exam; they will not accept a copy in its place.

However, I think that this "might" be only because they don't want the exams "floating around" out there. Perhaps, you could call and explain the situation and get aproval to send both the original "and" the copy?

When my dd wants to type something, usually just the essays, we print it out and glue it onto the exam in the appropriate place.

Re: Typing the exams?

Maybe you could skip the computer/scanner software and just go with a typewriter? That way he could type directly on the original exam.

Re: Typing the exams?

I can understand with the dysgraphia that it still would be helpful to him to type directly on your scanned document rather than typing separately, attaching later, etc. A suggestion would be to use the original exam, enter the student name, number, etc. on each page, and then indicate in red ink SEE ATTACHED on each side, each page of the exam, then attach your scanned/completed exam.

I know my kids would hate using a typewriter -- (I think I would nowadays since I'm so used to having the ease of corrections with a word processor)

Having said this, I would still suggest that you contact Student Services and discuss this with them and ask for their help in the matter. Certainly, they will understand the situation. If they give an OK to it, you could take their name for future reference if anyone questions it. You could perhaps type up a brief note and make copies/duplicates and then include that each time you send in an exam (since there are always different teachers who grade the exams) -- something like: so and so approved that the exam can be handled in this way -- or something like that.

Please do keep us posted on this. I know my son would use a word processor for the essays and we'd attach them, and there was never a question regarding that.

Re:Update: Typing the exams?

Just got off the phone with Student Services. It will be acceptable for him to type on a scanned copy. I will have to include the origionals. Postage will be more but ,oh well. I need to write a letter to AS explaining it so they have it on file if any questions arise. I won't have to include a note with any of the exams. Ds is really thrilled that he can do it this way.

Thanks Linda

for the update. That's good information to know. My son ended up doing all of his exams in pencil as he would often erase or "do over" things (we managed to do the entire course that way, even though we got comments from the instructors). Your method sounds like it would be best for all involved!

Re: I make copies of all the exams...

and dd does her work on them in pencil and then when she is satisfied with her work, she copies everything to the original exam.

We keep her "draft" of each exam just in case she needs it later on...like, in the event that an exam gets lost or something.

Re:Update: Typing the exams?

Linda,

I'm not familiar with a scanner, though believe it or not, we have a free one that came with our computer and we've never had a need for it. My son has the same handwriting nightmares as your son and I'm wondering if you could explain how this will work. Will the scanner bring up the blank exam on the monitor, allowing him to type in the answers and then print a copy? Then you'll send in the copy and the original exam? Or will it just give him a copy of the exam to use in a typewriter? Thanks.

Re:scanners

It's not the "scanner", but the "software program" that will allow you to type on the scanned copy that comes up on the screen (kind of like filling in an on-line form), then you print out the scanned, filled-in, copy of the exam.

Dh found the program at...

Download.com. It's called Form Pilot. You can do a search for it at Download.com and find it. There is a free trial and I think you may also purchase it for $15. I am sure we are just using the free download right now.

Thanks! I'll definitely check that out. Do you feel that I, too, should call the school and inform them of the intent to use this program and why? Or did you get the impression that it wouldn't have been necessary? Thanks.

I would call the school...

The guy who answered the phone at Student Services had to OK it through the assistant principal. But I just explained the situation and was OK'd in a matter of a few minutes. They are having me write a letter explaining the situation so they can have it on file so if any of the "exam correctors" ask, that it's all been OK'd through the school. My ds didn't want to do AS because of his writing problems. Now he's all excited to start. We are going to start a writing program from Avko called "Let's Write Right" and a spelling program from them also. Guess it's specifically for kids with dyslexia or who have a tough time with writing skills. Been so busy right now to start but it looks like it may work for him. Nothing else has. I really wish I would have caught his "problem" sooner. For years I just thought he was a "hormonal pre-teen".LOL. Guess better late than never.LOL
Have a great day!

Dysgraphia

Linda, my son also has dysgraphia which is one of the reasons we homeschool. I noticed a big change in my son when we allowed him to use the computer instead of writing out his work. Like others suggested, ds just uses the computer for the essays. Then he prints up that portion & tapes it into the test. This has worked well for him during the last school year. Keep us updated on how the spelling & writing programs have worked. I'm concerned because although ds studied cursive writing at ps & home he still has problems with it. Typing, though, was a breeze. By third grade he was typing up a storm!

Jane E...

do you happen to have any book recomendations on Dysgraphia? I don't know much about it and need to learn more. Would you mind emailing me? I would love to visit with you on how you handle things with your son. Dysgraphia is so new to me and I really feel like a fish out of water.LOL

Linda/dysgrahia

I didn't see your email addy so I thought that I'd just post the info here. My son's tutor is the one who told me she felt he had dysgraphia. She gave me guidelines: telling me to emphasize typing, oral reports, & to de-emphasize handwriting. I haven't read any books on dysgraphia, but have found tons of info on the internet. Just type dysgraphia into your search engine & see what comes up. They are book recommendations, websites, & posts on the subject. At one site a college student who was dysgraphic stated how he used tape recorders in his lecture classes & typed them up when he got back to his dorm. As for dh, computers have helped him immensely. He types very quickly & accurately. Its given him the extra help he's needed to get thru his assignments. He hated writing so much that he learned to type in third grade. One reason why we selected AS was that I figured his essays could be typed. So far, the program has worked well for us. Let me know how it works out for you. If you find any helpful recommendations let me know!

Thanks Jane for the tips...

For some reason this computer I'm on won't let me log in so my email doesn't show. Sorry about that. What I think I will so with the AS exams is do what you do and type and then print/tape the typed answers onto the exam. Will save on postage since more sheets will require more stamps. I'm cheap. LOL. His Psychology book should be here any day. I hope it's the same book that his sister used so that we can read together. Justs makes it so much easier for me to have a book too. There's no way he will get done with the program even in 4+ years if he has to read it all himself.
Thanks again.
Linda
