We have almost decided to go with AS for our son's high school program this coming September.
I have a question. Our son is working on Jacobs Elementary Algebra right now. He has done all the Keys to Percents, Fractions, and Decimals, and a few selected lessons from Saxon 76 and 87. He is also slowly working through Keys to Algebra and Geometry. We are trying to decided if he should test out (or take the tests only) for Essential Math 1 and 2 and get the credits for these. We would like for him to get 20 credits from AS. But if these two courses are considered as remedial courses by the colleges and universities, we might just skip them. What do you recommend? TIA, Emilia |

Personally, I would just put him in Algebra 1. My son did the Keys to Algebra and was quite prepared for AS Algebra 1 (you just need to send AS a letter verifying that he has completed a "prealgebra" course. If you want to do more math credits, add on Algebra 2 and then maybe a dual credit college course.

Mom2 (or anyone else who knows
If we are able to remove Essential Math 1 and 2 from the requirements, do we substitute these courses for electives? I'm pretty sure these two courses will be review for my son. He'll probably will be a little unhappy to have to do them. But if he gets high grades on these, he will bring his GPA up. Emilia |

I agree with just putting him in Algebra 1. Why waste his time if he doesn't need the review. Do Alg. 1 and geometry through AS, then pick up intermediate algebra (equivalent to algebra II) at the local community college. From there your son can move into college algebra. If you have the comm. coll. send AS a transcript, AS will transfer those credits to your son. Then he can pick up other courses as electives.
