Has anyone taken both Understanding English 1 & 2 and also English Comp/Grammar 1 & 2 I hear there is overlap on the Grammar, but what about the "Comp" pare of English C/G 1&2 ? Might it be helpful in preparation for English C/3 3&4 ? Has anyone here actually taken both English Comp/Grammar 1&2 and also Understanding English 1?2 ? Thank you! |

I have taken all four of them, Comp/Grammar 1/2 and UE 1/2. UE 1 and 2 are basically grades 7 and 8. They are mainly focused on grammar, spelling, usage, and diagramming sentences, with some short paragraphs.
Comp/Grammar 1/2 do a basic quick review of material covered in UE1/2, then move on to do paragraphs and short essays. HTH, Abby  |

Abby,
Do you think that C/G 1 and 2 help you with your writing? Did you see an improvement? Or were you already a pretty good writer? Have you done C/G 3 and 4? We had chosen C/G 3 and 4 for our son to do after he finishes with UE 1 and 2. He has done well with the writing in UE1 (completed) and UE2 (half way), but there is very little of it. Only paragraphs, no essays so far. From previous messages, I had concluded that there was too much repetion. But now I'm wondering if he should do C/G1 and 2. Emilia |

This is my thinking too. It seems the GRAMMAR understandably is probably repetision, but what about the "composition" portion of English C/G 1&2 ? ? Perhaps someone can post specifically as to the composition? I'm wondering why this is only half a unit -- is it because the Grammar is repetative of UC1 and UC 2 ? |

AmeriSchoolMom,
My main concern here is that I would like a smooth transition from UE 1 and 2 into C/G 3 and 4. If C/G 3 and 4 provide enough writing instruction for the different types of essays, then that should suffy for my son. I wonder if C/G 1 and 2 might be to much repetition for him. He has done well the paragraph writing found in UE2. At the beginning, I thought that UE1 was very basic and lacked in writing instruction. But it has been a good fit for my son who doesn't enjoy writing. UE1 and 2 build writing slowly, and I have seen his writing greatly improved, without overwhelming him. Emi |

Thanks for restating that. Your concern is actually my concern too; I was trying to say that I am wondering the exact same thing. I hope someone will respond |

AmeriSchoolMom,
I was thinking last night, after I posted, that maybe Ms. Howe, the AS counselor, will be the person to talk to. My son is only half way through UE2, so in a few weeks I will call her and ask my concern. I'll let you know once I talk to her. Emilia |

I don't think they helped very much. Basically, the only thing they really did was give me positive reinforcement, and get me used to how they want writing done. I have already taken Calvert grades K-8, so pretty much everything I had already learned. I haven't done 3 and 4 yet, they've only sent 1 and 2 so far. I can flip through them and let you know what I think when I get them. Abby |

Abby,
Once you receive the C&G 3 and 4, it would very helpful if you let us know their contents and what you think about them. Thank you. Emilia |

I'm not Abby, but my son did complete the C & G 3 and 4 courses a little over a year ago. They weren't that hard. They focused on basic types of writing and expanded formats. The research papers are actually long essays. I don't remember all of the details, but I remember that he wrote the research papers, persuasive paragraphs/essays, descriptive paragraphs/essays, and even business letters requesting services. My son has since done dual credit at the local comm. coll. and completed Eng. Comp. I and II. He is currently enrolled in world lit., which requires quite a bit of writing. He's had no trouble at all with the college courses, so I guess AS courses helped prepare him well.

Hi Janice,
That's the information I was looking for. I had a feeling that doing C&G 1 and 2 could be redundant after UE1 and 2. We are looking for a couple of courses that will prepare our son for our community college. Thank you for your feedback. Emilia |
