Some 63 seconds of feedback, tuning up and general audience noise make for a different opening to anyone's album, but once the music starts, there's no mistaking where we are and who we're listening to. Disc One of this 2xCD set opens with a five song medley (which would expand into the ten-strong set of the Live At The Palladium album recorded two years later), unusual not only for its inclusion of 'Help' (or perhaps not, considering the enduring popularity of The Beatles in Japan) but also for its extended (and excellent) keyboard/guitar workout on the fade. In fact, 'Help' is the highlight of this medley, its complex instrumental and vocal tracks being extraordinarily well reproduced, a tribute to the sterling qualities of The Carpenters' touring band (who are introduced before the next title - see below). The reference to Tony Peluso "catching a plane" apparently refers to a paper plane thrown from the audience.
Musicians: Richard Carpenter (vocals, electric piano, piano, ARP synthesiser), Karen Carpenter (vocals, drums), Cubby O'Brien (drums), Bob Messenger (electric bass, flute, tenor sax), Danny Woodhams (electric bass, vocals), Tony Peluso (guitar, organ, electric bass, ARP synthesiser, narration), Doug Strawn (electric clarinet, organ, vocals), Pete Henderson (vocals).
