Amy 3/20 - Protocol on Ex's Funeral
Dear Amy: What is the correct protocol (if any) for attendance at the funeral of an ex-wife or ex-husband?

--Loyal Reader

Dear Reader: I'm not aware of any strict protocol on this, but normally people don't attend funerals for former spouses.

The burden is on the ex to read the situation carefully and choose to do what is best for the family. If the funeral is for an ex-husband, having their mother present might give children comfort, but if it would create a problem with the current wife, then the ex should not attend.

It's probably best for an ex to contact a current spouse and say, "I'd like to pay my respects to Johnny. Would it be all right with you if I attended the services?"

Too bad Loyal Reader didn't say whether they'd had children in common or whether either of them had remarried. That would have helped!

I guess it would just depend on the feelings - if there is a lot of bitterness and hatred, then I'd just steer clear. IF it's a cool-but-comfortable relationship, I say Why Not?
