Garfunkel is proud of his roots and growing up in Queens with former partner Paul Simon, but he realized as a youngster that baseball existed outside of New York."It occurred to me when I was a kid that if you're a New Yorker you don't have to be a Brooklyn Dodger fan or a New York Yankee fan, and those few New York Giant fans. . .not for me. In the piece, which ran Tuesday (March 9), Simon recalls hearing rumors that DiMaggio had been upset over the "Mrs. Robinson" lyric, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" The musician reveals that he took an opportunity to explain the phrase to DiMaggio a few years after the song's release. "I said that I didn't mean the lines literally, that I thought of him as an American hero and that genuine heroes were in short supply," Simon writes of an impromptu meeting with DiMaggio in the early '70s.
