Debbey and Jim seem to be the experts on this!
![]() How about rate these one thru five! One being they never made it in the States - and five being they're just as prominent in the States as they are in Canada! Please explain the two, three, and four ratings, okay? I'm going to guess that The Tragically Hip would be a two, April Wine would be a three, and Our Lady Peace would be a four. Tragically Hip Blue Rodeo April Wine Saga Doucette Harlequin Trooper Chilliwack Stampeders Ugly Ducklings Lighthouse Maskmakkhan A Foot In Coldwater Crowbar King Biscuit Boy Goddo Triumph Kim Mitchell Max Webster Tea Party Headstones 54*40 Moist I Mother Earth Our Lady Peace Finger Eleven I'll add more, later!

Whooooaaa! I am not an expert…
I am just very knowledgeable about Canadian Rock… The only artists who make it big in The USA are, recording artists like Shania Twain, Celine Dionne, Sarah McLaughlin (and I am not so sure how popular she is) these artists are Top 40, Shania is almost 'new' Country… Well, let me think about it… I would probably say though Rush would have been the biggest Canadian Rock Success in the USA next to Neil Young (who… was only born in Canada and is not really Canadian Cheers!

I'll list what I think are examples of a five:
Nickelback Sum 41 Avril Lavigne Rush Guess Who BTO Neil Young (even though he's half American - so I'm not sure he counts.) Joni Mitchell (ditto to the above) Gordon Lightfoot Bryan Adams Maybe Barenaked Ladies would only be a four! As for Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, Default, and Three Days Grace - I'm guessing they would all be fours. Moist would maybe be a two. So would Sam Roberts and I Mother Earth. Kim Mitchell and the Tragically Hip would be twos! April Wine and Saga would be threes! Man, this can get rather tough. Peace out.

Man! This is a tough one! It's a good thing you've suggested the one-thru-five rating system - since this isn't so black-and-white! Okay, I'll make a couple of lists! I'll make one list of artists who I think made it in the States - and I'll make another list of artist whom I'm not sure of:
Artists Whom Did Make: Anne Murray Avril Lavigne Band Barenaked Ladies BTO Celine Dion Default Finger Eleven Gordon Lightfoot Guess Who Joni Mitchell Loverboy Neil Young Nelly Furtado Nickelback Rush Sarah McLaughlin Shania Twain Steppenwold Sum 41 Three Days Grace The band that does 'Signs' - I forget their name. ~ Some maybe only be four! Let me know, okay? Artists I'm Not Sure Of: 54*40 April Wine Blackie and the Rodeo Kings Blue Rodeo Bush (Dominick's band) Chilliwack Coney Hatch Crowbar Doucette Gowan Harlequin Headstones I Mother Earth Jeff Heeley Band Junkhouse Kim Mitchell King Buscuit Boy Lighthouse Mashmakkhan Max Webster Men Without Hats Moist Our Lady Peace Persuit of Happines Pilate Prism Saga Sam Roberts Stampeders Streetheart Tea Party Teenage Head Tragically Hip Trooper Ugly Ducklings Did I get this right - or not really?

BTO was huge with Not Fragile; the Guess Who with the American Woman album are two examples of individual success.

Some things to consider:
1. Some of the artists mentioned may be well-known in some parts of the US, but not other parts. 2. Some of the artists mentioned may not even be well-known in some parts of Canada. Keep Hipping!

It's kind of hard to determine with younger bands… they are just starting out and the question remains will they sustain…
Like: Sum 41, Nickelback etc Some of the younger bands… who will sustain… may not break into the USA until 2 or 3 record releases… We all wonder why Blue Rodeo didn't make it… and then this is true of The Tragically Hip… although The Hip like Blue Rodeo both do extensive tours of the USA… and from what I have heard from other fans of both bands… They are much much smaller venues… like clubs… April Wine in the early 80's played large Arenas as did Triumph… I don't think anyone mentioned Triumph… Like April Wine were most popular in the mid west and southern states such as Texas and California… I first knew of Triumph when I was living in Japan… Japanese television had excellent music programs… and what I saw on TV was Triumph's Appearance at California Jam II… I am pretty sure this was the one ![]() I guess it's all in the way you view a bands success… is it sold out venues, or record sales? Cheers!

What about in regards to radio airplay, though? It's best to go by radio airplay - since that's how most people discover new music, and not everyone can afford to buy a library full of recordings!

MMMM , radio airplay is not not necessarily indicative of a bands success. Bands like the Wine and Triumph toured their butts off and had great albums -which helped to get what measure of success they had.

I understand what you mean, Jim! However, since not everyone can afford to go to concerts or buy recording - I just think it is best to go by radio airplay! I really do want to know which of these artists have gotten airplay on American radio stations. After all, just about anyone can turn on the radio and new music that way. Also, there's just something special about hearing your favourite songs on the radio - that you just don't get from hearing those same songs on your CDs. It's kinda hard to explain. Maybe it's the knowledge of knowing that hundreds of other people are hearing that same song at the same time you're hearing it.

Probably just about all of them, in border towns! The question would be, how far down?

Well depends on the band. AW is popular in the South and Rush is everywhere. Rock radio is funny like that as well.

I heard that there was one station in Texas and another in Illinois that plays the Hip.

No doubt; regional bias has a lot to do with it.

One thing you guys have to understand, though - there are several ways of determining the success of bands. They include album sales, concert shows, and radio airplay! None of them are really all that accurate - but if you consider all three, then you have a pretty good idea of how popular they are. I guess it does seem pretty reasonable that you'd wonder which bands get played on the American radio stations.
Keep Hipping!
