Band's Message Board Horror Stories ( 20:37:19 SatApr 3 2004 )

I happen to really love the Tragically Hip, myself. Just curious, Debbey, do you post at any Tragically Hip boards? If so, what are the Canadian Tragically Hip fans' general attitude towards the American Tragically Hip fans? The reason why I ask this is because I tend to feel as if I get lambasted from both sides when it comes to the Tragically Hip. I mean, fellow Americans criticise me for liking the Tragically Hip because they think it's somehow un-patriotic to like obscure Canadian bands. Not that I really give a damn about patriotism, anyway - but, still, what the hell does one thing have to do with the other? I mean, even if I were to show patriotism towards the US while liking the Tragically Hip at the same time - then I would get accused of being two-faced. And then I've also gotten lambasted by the Canadian Tragically Hip fans for liking "their" music - they think that I, being American/non-Canadian, have no business to be liking Canada's beloved band. At least that's what happened to me in the past. I mean, I would like to think that most Canadian Tragically Hip fans don't feel that way about us. I mean, shouldn't they be encouraging us - instead of putting us down just because we happen to live a little bit south of them?

Re: The Tragically Hip!! ( 22:52:47 SatApr 3 2004 )

I am not aware of any Tragically Hip Forums? I think there was one… once… but from what I heard it was a lot of fighting and bickering…
I have found in the past… some Tragically Hip Fans very Arrogant… so I never bothered with any forums… Hey I get news from the radio and hear songs all day long
I am content… with phoneting with everyone here and at my site… do wish some fans would find my site… I feel like I am talking to myself in the Tragically Hip Thread

Cheers! :flowers:

Re: The Tragically Hip!! ( 03:37:22 SunApr 4 2004 )

Actually, Debbey and April W, if it's of any consolation to you gals - Led Zeppelin has a lot of very arrogant fans, too. I feel really bad about saying this, because I have been a fan of Led Zeppelin since I was four years old. I just wish that everyone who shares a passion for the same artist could just all get along!! I have seen more than a few Led Zeppelin board self-destruct throughout my years of reading/posting at message boards - all because of unbending views over what being a "true Led Zeppelin fan" is.

April W, can you believe that some older Led Zeppelin fans lambaste the younger Led Zeppelin fans for liking music from their (the older generation) era? It's sad, but true. I even stumbled across a Led Zeppelin board once that said that they didn't want anyone born after 1968 posting there. Now how dumb is that? So you have every right to be bothered by those jerks who don't want you liking the Tragically Hip just because you aren't a Canadian.

Oh, and Stairway to Heaven - that one is a major splitter with Led Zeppelin fans!! :scatter: Some Zep fans believe that you aren't a "true Led Zeppelin fan" if you like Led Zeppelin but not Stairway to Heaven. Some Zep fans believe that anyone who's a "true Led Zeppelin fan" would recognize what a "great epic" Starway to Heaven is, and therefore list Stairway to Heaven as being a favourite - while other Zep fans believe that you're a poseur if you list Stairway to Heaven as a favourite (because almost everyone knows that song, even if they aren't a Zep fan), and insist that anyone who is a "true Led Zeppelin fan" will pick a more obscure Zep song as a favourite.

There are many other splitters as well, regarding Led Zeppelin fans - but I won't get into them on this thread.

Re: The Tragically Hip!! ( 19:48:52 SunApr 4 2004 )

Well… hmmmm… Yes Bands and their Message Boards… A lot of ego's and jealousy…and know it all attitudes…

It's amazing how when fans take shots at other fans… how it really kills the spirit of the fans…

Two artists, I encountered problems with… now, their popularity is diminishing… and my spirit has died too…

This is why I never got involved with The Tragically Hip Forums… and maybe have been too shy to read a lot of the stuff posted around the internet…

I have loved The Tragically Hip from the beginning… I have been a quiet fan… and just enjoy hearing them on the radio and listening to their cd's…

By doing this… My Tragically Hip spirit has sustained…

I am anticipating the release of the upcoming "Untitled" album featuring "Vaccination Scar"… I am right into it… and you can bet… I will have a tape ready for this occasion :rockin:

For whatever reason, this is becoming the best kept secret going… I mean… other than me hearing it on the radio Y108 Rocks… and posting about it here and at CanadianStarsRock.ca… I have read nothing anywhere else… I guess they want to release it quietly? It's kind of exciting… reminds me of the first time I heard the very first Tragically Hip song on the radio (Q107) back in 1987… The song was *Small Town Bringdown*

Cheers! :flowers:

I definitely know what Renee and Debbey mean!! Lately, I've been trying to figure out when the first Led Zeppelin board/group took place - and whatever happened to it. But, yeah, I've seen too many fences being put up as far as Led Zeppelin fans are concerned.

Re: The Tragically Hip!! ( 20:37:49 MonApr 5 2004 )

In case you are all wondering… In regards to Led Zeppelin and why I am not participating too much in the forum here at Rock n Rolla…

Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin are my "ulitmate" for many years…

Led Zeppelin have been defunct since 1980… almost 25 years…
What you have experienced on Led Zeppelin Message Boards… could be, lack of any real "new news"… I have never surfed the internet in regards to Zeppelin… Over the years I have read enough in magazines, books and heard lots on the radio… as well, before the internet… Many of my friends are Zep Heads and we found other ways of hooking up with other Zep fans… What's the worst is seeing some of the Led Zeppelin Chitter chatter Live… Phew now this is scary stuff! I have seen fist fights break out in bars… watched friend's get thrown out etc… Scary when fans take things so seriously… This is basically why back in the late '80's I gave up on talking on about Led Zeppelin…

I really like what Harmony has done here with the Led Zeppelin Forum… it's a safe haven for all of you…
I very rarely listen to my Led Zeppelin cds or records… I mean I have been a fan for almost 30 years… The radio usually satisfies my appetite for hearing Led Zeppelin…

I am so happy Harmony started this set of forums… I have met all of you… Music Lover's… and now I have my forum too for my first love Canadian Rock… My suggestion, try to stick to the "general formatted message boards" they are catching on…

I feel, Band's actual Message Boards, becomes a way of fans vieing for the attention of the actual bands and their members… I read it on a few band's message boards… and it is so irritating… because suddenly, going to shows etc is not really about the music but more, who is hob knobbing with members of the band… who is being treated nicer etc…

So… now… let's carry on with The Tragically Hip!! chitter chatter :rockin:
I am enjoying reading everyone's enthusiasm for The Hip :rockin:

Cheers! :flowers:

:wowsmilie: That's a very interesting story, Debbey! I guess too many Led Zeppelin fans do take things way too seriously.

BTW, we've kinda gotton away from the original topic of the Tragically Hip. Maybe you, Mick, or Harmony should split this thread up by April W's post and move it to B&PS. :jump2:

Unfortunately, there's even some divisions amonst Simon & Garfunkel fans. :scatter: Paul Simon fans vs Art Garfunkel fans, older fans vs younger fans, fans who like Simon & Garfunkel for their lyrical depths vs fans who like Simon & Garfunkel for nostalgic reasons, etc. :jump2: I really like the Simon & Garfunkel board here, though, because it feels so calm and relaxed.

Well, one thing is for sure certain. This is the nicest message that I've ever stumbled across, thus far - most message boards are too much fighting and such. :fight:

This is the reason why many people don't post on message boards. Too many fights go on. Ideally, message boards are supposed to bring people from all around the world with common interests together - but It doesn't always work out that way.

It is very pleasant coming to Rock n Rolla…There is so much variety of things to phone about so there is no reason to get really bored… There seems to be something for everyone…

And everyone is polite and respects everyone… This is so nice…

Best, Hang In… I think we are able to keep April W away from those not so nice American bashing message boards

Cheers! :flowers:

Awww, how sweet, Debbey! April has been in high spirits lately, so that's cool!! Plus, she's also very happy that you agree with her that it's wrong to bash people because of their nationality. Anyway, enough on that. When I first joined this board, I wasn't sure if I was going to stay or not - but I really love the friendly atmosphere of this board, though. So you can bet that I'll be sticking around here for awhile. I'm not sure if I'll ever post in the music forums, though. :scatter:

I explained more about my situation in "Good Music Is In The Ear Of The Beholder". I sometimes feel like I get lambasted from both sides because I like both classic rock and newer rock. Like I tend to get lambasted by the fans of new music for liking "older uncool music" - and then I also get lambasted by the fans of classic rock for liking "untalented crap without substance". I mean, gee, what's so wrong with liking both?

Here's a great post from Debbey regarding message board conflicts:

Quote: debbey at 13:10:56 Thu Apr 8 2004

Read the topic Band's and Their Message Board Horror Stories…
The internet is becoming one of the biggest sources of entertainment… It's a very valuable tool in many people's lives… Me I love to read, not so insane about television… Reading, I can listen to the radio… and now… with the internet… I can also write… This is so fascinating for me… My FIRST LOVE… Rock n Roll… I have a lot of fun… reading and writing… and dicussing music with everyone and anyone… It's not just about America you will read cynasism (spelling)… It's all over the internet in different forums from Music too, Sports, Politics etc… The world is made up of "individuals"… You have to stay away from the "cynics"
all they ever want to do is bring everyone else "down" to their depressed level…
If you think some of the sites you are reading are bad… you should check out some of the sports sites that are around… Hockey for Canadians and Football, Basketball for Americans… phew things get pretty wild & ugly… also, check out some of the international Soccer sites… Europeans take soccer "way too seriously" Britain is the worst…

Peace out.

Re: The Tragically Hip!! ( 20:16:22 SunApr 18 2004 )

Okay, I know Debbey doesn't want any more political discussion on this board, so I'll just say what I have to say in as few words as possible. Being a dual citizen myself, I tend to get really bugged by these tiresome old "Canada vs the USA" that tend to take place all over the internet. I think I can also safely speak for many Canadians and Americans alike when I say that most of us find this arguement to be pointless and stupid. But, the thing of it is, though - you really cannot take these kinds of people seriously. They're obviously very immature people who are unable to discuss issues rationally. That's why it's best to avoid forums like those. I mean, I myself am no Bush supporter - but I have great respect for those who can defend Bush's stance from a mature and rational standpoint. I agree that we all could learn to be a little bit more tolerant of other people's views - even if they might be completely different from ours.

To be continued in the next post…

Peace out.
:pacman:
