Dear Amy: My husband and I married a bit later in life after I had established my career. I chose to keep my name. Now that we are going to have our first child we are trying to figure out what to do with the baby's name. We had originally planned on giving our son my husband's name, but many women who have kept their names have shared with me that this becomes confusing when the child enters school. Either people assume that the mother is divorced from the father or they call the mom Mrs. Husband's Name. I don't mind, but it isn't my name.
We considered hyphenating our names, but that would make the last name very long. I'm worried that it will be confusing to our child or maybe make him think I am not "Mom enough" because I don't share his name. Can you offer any advice on this and ask your readers to respond? Name Recognition Dear Name: As someone who has kept my name and raised a daughter with a different last name, I can tell you that these days it seems rare enough to find a nuclear family who all share a surname -- though it does still seem to happen on television sitcoms. My experience is that schools cope well with this by sending mail to "The Parents Of . . . " Teachers are smart, literate and able to juggle many opposing ideas. They also might not share a surname with their own children. No matter what the rest of the world calls you, you'll still be "Mom" to your child. Let's see what other readers think.

About hyphenating names - that would depend on how long the names are.

The child usually gets the fathers name unless the mother is single. Put two last names together and you could have a name longer then the alphabet…

Well, if both names are short enough, then that's okay.

No, I think the baby should just have the husbands name.
Peace out.
