Carly Simon releases "You're So Vain." The song's lyrics were rumored to be about Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty. vj Greetings - everyone. It is me valjean -- or if you prefer -just vj -- (I really don't like being called val) Led is letting me set up shop over here for a little while with Today in Music History from AMG (so we are calling it All Music). As I was telling Led, I am about to embark on doing the bios over of a whole lot of acts on a booking site and thought it would be fun to tie them in to their info from AMG when and if they come up, and I'm sure they will. I hope you will enjoy it. Today's questions Who do you think Carly meant? Warren or Mick? Do you like Faster Pussycat's version better? |

Welcome back, Valjean!
![]() Well, I can't say that I'm really Carly Simon fan. Perhaps Jimbo, That 70s Gal, or some some of the Garfunkel girls might, though. Judging by the song title, though, I would guess that the song is about Mick Jagger. I've heard that Mick can be rather arrogant. I have no idea who Faster Pussycat is. Anyway, I'll look forward to reading some more tidbits from AMG.

Thank you for the welcome back, Tragically Hipper
from Wikipedia Faster Pussycat is a Los Angeles sleaze rock band formed in the 1980s and named for the 1965 film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Their first album, Faster Pussycat, was released in 1987. The band hit their high point in 1989 with their second album, Wake Me When It's Over with its hit ballad, "House of Pain", which went gold. When grunge took over in popularity in 1991, Faster Pussycat fell off the map as their genre of music quickly went out of style, though they did release their third album Whipped!, which featured backing vocals by Bekka Bramlett. read the rest here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster_Pussycat They did a cover of You're So Vain that was pretty darn good I thought! |

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Carly Simon. I tend to prefer the softer music, and Carly is pretty high on my list of favourites. I kind of wonder if she's related to Paul Simon - although I kind of doubt it. Yeah, I think that song is about Mick Jaggar. I really cannot stand The Stones, and I think Mick is a pompous arse.

Yeah, I love Carly Simon, too! I think she has a very soulful voice! For those of you who keep saying saying that Mick Jagger is arrogant, why do you think that? Have you ever met him? It's okay if you don't like The Stones, but please don't assume bad things about Mick. I think that song is about neither. Perhaps, it's about an ex, or something. I do like Faster Pussycat's version of the song, as well.

Great to see you here jim, and great to have our little AMG forum back, eh?
Well, to answer some thoughts, Carly is not related to Paul Simon. She is the daughter of Richard L. Simon who co-founded the publishing house of Simon & Schuster, Inc., in 1924. Personally I believe it was about Warren Beatty, and it seems that I am agreeing with Warren himself from the You're So Vain page on Carly's site --Carly: It certainly sounds like it was about Warren Beatty. He certainly thought it was about him - he called me and said thanks for the song… --WP: You had gone with him? --Carly: Hasn’t everybody? Carly continues to be enigmatic about it, refusing to give a definitive answer. She does reveal that James also thought it was about him since he coincidentally flew up to Nova Scotia right when the song was released! It also seems that Mick is singing backup on the song, if I'm reading that right, cuz I didn't know that. Read all about it right here http://www.carlysimon.com/vain/vain.htm vj |

Well, I can't say that I'm too big on Carly Simon - but I do like Faster Pussycat's version of You're So Vain. That version rocks! I guess I never really thought of who that song was about. My mom has a Carly Simon CD, though - with You're So Vain on it.

Great to be chatting again with you too Valerie. For the longest while, always had her and Carole King confused. Carole sings Its Too Late?

Yeah, my mom like Carole King, too - and I do tend to get those artists mixed up. I really am not a fan of either, though. Faster Pussycat does do an awesome rendition of You're So Vain, though.

Well, Carly was kinda famous as the female Mick Jagger becuase she had that "rubbermouth" thing going on
She had some other big hits like "Anticipation" and she and James remade the Charlie and Inez Foxx hit song "Mockingbird" Wonder why they never got big into who she was talking about in her song Jesse? Jesse, I won't cut fresh flowers for you Jesse, I won't make the wine cold for you Jesse, I won't change the sheets for you I won't put on cologne I won't sit by the phone for you |

Yeah, I really fancy Carly Simon - as well as Carol King. The song Jesse could possible by this bloke who has the hots for her, but whom she doesn't fancy. Yeah, I reckon You're So Vain is a song about Warren Beatty. I don't know much about him, but I've heard he can be a bit of a wanker. Carly Simon has such a brill voice.

Yeah, I also fancy Carly Simon. She has a very beautiful voice, and her songs are so beautiful. I also reckon the song You're So Vain is about Warren. I reckon he's even more of a pompous arse than Mick Jagger is I'm not saying this just because I don't fancy The Stones. I'm saying this from the stories I've heard of him.

Carly Simon is okay, but I'm not especially a big fan of her. I do like Faster Pussycat's cover of You're So Vain, though. BTW, who is Warren Beatty? I'm really not too familiar with him.

Warren Beatty is an actor who is also Shirley McLaine's brother. Although he got some notices for Splendor in the Grass with Natalie Wood, and was already getting the ladies' man, perennial bachelor rep back then, he really became world famous with the movie Bonnie and Clyde in which he co-starred with Faye Dunaway,
He's been linked with every actress and singer known to mankind, from Carly to Madonna. He's married now and has 4 - count 'em 4 - kids with actress Annette Bening. |

Well, at least in 70s pop. Ann Wilson of Heart is a great singer, too.
