Yeah, Peter Garrett is the bald guy. He kind of reminds me of Gord Downie and Kim Mitchell - although Kim Mitchell used to have long hair.

:wowsmilie: Quite a few stuff happened for The Beatles on this day. I didn't know that The Beatles went way back to 1961, though. I would love to have seen John Lennon play in Jesus Christ Superstar. It's too bad that offer was revoked.

Keep Hipping!

I really fancy The Supremes. They're best known for Stop In The Name of Love. That's such a brill tune!

Holy Cow! I can't imagine Jesus Christ Superstar without Ted Neeley in the title role

and that's even though I have seen a stage production of it once with the Paper Mill Playhouse director Robert Johannsen playing Jesus and a guy from England playing Judas, and he WAS pretty good though Carl Anderson (the movie Judas) is an impossible act to follow. We talked to him after the show and told him so. There were a couple of actors from the actual movie in the one I saw!

I gather we are talking the movie not the 'Theatrical Performance'?

It's the first time I have read reference to John Lennon… :juggle:

I will have to ask HeavyLoad about this… I have always been under the impression… Ian Gillan! of Deep Purple was the very first offered this role… due to his outstanding opera type vocals

Cheers! :flowers:

ps: In my opinion Ian Gillan! would have been the ulitmate Jesus Christ Superstar

I agree that it is practically universally acknowledged that Ian Gillian was the penultimate vocalist in the role.

I dunno how it would have played out in the movie if he had accepted the role, but Ted Neeley certainly had "the look"

Maybe John Lennon was asked after Ian turned it down?

Ian Gillan would have played the part pretty well, but I really cannot imagine anyone other than Ted Neeley playing the part. I really don't think John Lennon looks the part.

Ive just finished raeding the new Beatles biography by Bob Spitz and it confirms that Lennon was the first one to be offered that role. He turned it down just as quickly on the grounds of hypocrisy.

Yeah, I've never watched Jesus Christ Superstar. This certainly is a big month for John Lennon, though. Q107 is featuring John Lennon all this month. It's been 25 years since John Lennon was assassinated.

On Lennons part. He stated numerous times he wasnt a big believer in Christ and to play him would have run against the grain. I remember the evening Lennon was gunned down in 1980; was doing homework when I got a call from a friend who was in tears. Very devastating moment.

No, that was on an earlier album. Double Fantasy had songs like Woman, Watching the Wheels, and Just Like Starting Over. That album has a different flavour from any of Lennon's previous works, because the songs he sings about on that album were written for his peers. He was no longer trying to appeal to a younger generation. Basically, Just Like Starting Over is an ode to all the hippies from the late 60s/early 70s. What was about to become a new life for John Lennon had tragically gotten cut short.

Keep Hipping!
