Re: Gene McDaniels ( 23:13:31 ThuJan 5 2006 )

I wonder if anyone ever heard of him --

I've always been a big Gene McDaniels' fan. His hit song "100 Pounds of Clay" was one of my first ever favorite rock n roll songs. I remember my father bringing me home the Hit Parade Magazine when I was 9 and it had the words to the song. I was so happy!

I know somebody covered his song "Tower of Strength" not too long ago, but I don't know who.

He wrote "Feel Like Making Love" for Roberta Flack.

I wonder if Kerry Livgren from Kansas was inspired by that song.

Re: Gene McDaniels ( 08:55:51 WedFeb 1 2006 )

I think that Gene McDaniel would be considered pop, early pop - his string of hits were 1960-1962,

I looked him up on The Covers Project to find out who covered that song, but it seems nobody covered Tower of Strength, at least on record, though I know my son told me that he was at a show when the act onstage did the song, and my son said, hey I know this song (either from my 45 record collection and I always played the oldies station in the car and he is often told he is too young to know all the songs he knows, or who sang them originally)

Elvis Costello and Georgie Fame covered "Point of No Return".

Re: Gene McDaniels ( 05:00:13 WedFeb 22 2006 )

Here is a link to his page on soulwalking uk, jim, if you're interested in knowing more about him
http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Gene%20McDaniels.html

though I disagree with their statement:

"He sadly fell from favour when the publics tastes made a bee-line towards the Beatles and their like."

We could say that was true of a lot of US artists as far as the Beatles go and let that cover it, but to me, I'd say it would be more accurate to say music was evolving into a style that he just wasn't doing or his label wasn't letting him do. All 3 of his top hits had somewhat of a calypso beat to them and - don't get me wrong - I love that stuff, but that was very popular in the 50s and early 60s and then faded out to be replaced by rock even before the British Invasion.

The Four Seasons were one particular group that was becoming very popular and that is one group that held its own against the British Invasion.

Ty for the link Valerie; labels have to known to hold an artist back creatively in the past.
