Actually it is Dolly's song. She wrote it and she used to perform it as the closing of her show in the 70s before she became a superstar, though I believe she was already widely known in country music. And, like many a wannabe star, she put up with a lot of ragging back then. She was happy to let Whitney record it, there was a lotta bucks in it for Dolly - not only the remake, but it being featured on the Bodyguard soundtrack. I played Dolly's version for my kids at the time and they also liked Dolly's version better. Let's face it, most people like songs they can sing along with and Whitney was picking songs to show off her amazing vocal range at the time
