While I do understand that while some Canadians would want nothing more than to see their favorite Canadian artist breat through into the States - others are firmly adament against it. This is very similar to the attitude of many indie music fans. While some would love to see their favorite indie artists get more recognitions - others are so strongly opposed to it, that once an indie artist make it mainstream, they no longer like that indie artist. That includes, even if the indie artist never changed their style - they are still accused of selling out, nonetheless. This seems to be the same case with fans of Canadian artists.
The only difference is, they seem to have no problem with their favorite Canadian artist being mainstream in Canada and loved by the general Canadian populace - but are strongly opposed to them being mainstrean in the States and being loved general American populace. In all fairness, they maybe don't have a problem with a few Americans liking their favorite Canadian artists - as long it makes up only a minor portion of the American population. However, once they become mainstream in the States and loved by the general American populace - then these artists get accused of selling out, even if they never changed their style. I believe this is what happened with the Barenaked Ladies. I bet that if the Tragically Hip ever crossed through into the States - then the same thing would happen, even if the Tragically Hip never changes their style. Do you think it maybe has to do with identifying yourself so closely with your taste in music - that you feel that if people outside of your group starts liking it, too - that it kinda 'cheapens it for you?' Thoughts, anyone?

Well, yeah, I think these people identify with their taste in music too much.

I think the problem tends to be with with extremists in this country. The uber-nationalists - which seem to be far and few between, in this country - tend to accuse the majority of Canadians of not supporting our local acts, enough. So, I think part of the problem is, these people seem to not like Canadian bands really for the music - but just simply because they're Canadian. That's why bands like the Tragically Hip (no offence to Hip fans) seem to get this cult following here - and Canadians who don't like the Hip tend to get obstracized for it. So, as a result, that may also be why some non-Canadian Hip fans end up getting rebuffed, as well. I guess these nationalistic types feel that when non-Canadians like the Hip, too - that it tends to 'cheapen' it for them. That could maybe explain why April got the treatment that she did in school. In other words, their obsession with the Hip seem to be their way of saying, 'Hey, everyone, look at me - I'm a Canadian!' So that may be why they feel adament about not wanting the Hip to have international recognition. They like something that they can call 'their own'. I think most Canadians just listen to whatever music they enjoy, though - and don't listen to certain bands, just because they're Canadian.

I guess some Canadians do feel a bit threatened with Americans liking the lesser-known Canadian artists - because they like the idea of having something that separates the Canadians from the Americans. It's a very petty attitude to have, in my book.
Keep Hipping!

I think the reason why some indie music fans are so possessive about the music they listen to… is because they like to see themselves as being a part of the indie culture. Unfortunately, it's fans like them that hold the indie artists back. The way I see it is… if you truly care about the indie artists… you would encourage their success. I think it is sad that they stop liking they indie artists… when the indie artists become popular. Again, it's the whole possessiveness issue… and wanting to claim the music just for themselves. So that's why they feel betrayed… when the indie artists become popular. I agree that that is a very bad attitude to have.
As for the Canadian music scene… yeah, I suppose that's sort of the same way. They want to claim the Canadian culture just for themselves… so, as a result, they don't wish to share the Canadian culture with other countries. Fortunately, I don't know of too many Canadians who have that attitude, though. Kierra |
